Research oppertunities at VT?

I was curious about the research opertunities in VT. Are undergrad research oppertunities abundant in engieering? How early could one start? How common is it for people do do research as undergrads? Also, what grad schools to people from VT typically attend?

It is very common, and you can get started as a freshman if you ask some professors.

Be proactive - don’t just sit around and expect to be asked to join a research project. That won’t happen!! Be aware, ask questions, pay attention to your emails - your department head usually sends out periodic emails listing upcoming opportunities, from research projects to coops, career fairs, internships and jobs. Use the resources at VT to help yourself by brushing off and polishing your resume and practicing interview skills. These services are offered on campus.

If you know what branch of engineering you want to get into you can probably email the professors that are in that department and ask if they need any help once you get on campus. Yeah, you’ll probably be doing pretty boring work at first (it’ll be all you really know how to do) but if you stick with it and keep learning and show interest eventually you’ll get to be on the bleeding edge.
