<p>Does anyone know how accessible the professors and research opportunities are at U of C? I was just down at another college last weekend and alot of the students there had their own research projects going and likewise the professors were very accessible (we had smoothies at one of the frat houses with the main professor...) i was just wondering what the atmosphere at U of C was in regard to the faculty.</p>
<p>My son had some correspondence with a current UC bio student. He assured him that there were an enormous number of opportunities available helping out in the research labs. In fact, there were more positions open than students to fill them! Many students carve out a tiny niche in one of the projects and use this to develop their own "sub-project".</p>
<p>I can also say this in terms of the profs. When my son took RIBS last summer (Research in Biological Sciences), the two instructors were part of the regular UC faculty. They were very open and accessible. In fact, one provided a reference to my son, not only for UC but all the schools he applied to. He's exchanged a few e-mails with this person since then. He's always been very accomodating and interested in what my son was doing.</p>
<p>In his first 4 weeks on campus S was invited to join a university group on an archeological dig in Turkey this fall. He has had a great deal of contact with his professors, including hours of discussion in their offices. One professor last quarter is a divisional dean, who still found time to talk. Office hours of U of C profs can be a little different, one last quarter had hours from 9 - 11 pm Sunday night!</p>
