Is it easy to do research w/ a professor in the chem/bio sci fields at UCI? I want to be able to get a position w/ a professor. I have been accepted to UCSD and i know their reputation for research.

Research is plentiful. Of course, you must be the one that takes the initiative to go up to the professor and make the connection. But if you don't come across as someone totally clueless, you can get research. In bio alone, there are over 250 labs you can work in, and if you also throw in chemistry, there are maybe 100 more on top of that. UCI also has a strong reputation for undergraduate research. Were you able to attend the Explore UCI event? I know they usually address research at that.

no i didnt go to Explore UCI but I am going to Celebrate UCI day which has an hour long seminar about Research opportunities. What do you mean by "But if you don't come across as someone totally clueless, you can get research" do you mean if you don't know the subject well? awesome UCI is cool

Well, let's say you go in to a professor's office because you want to do research with them. At the very least, you should know a little bit about what that professor does and why you find it interesting. You'll learn the research techniques on the job, but hopefully you can carry an intelligent conversation. If they're going to be investing time and money in you, they want to be sure that you will contribute to the lab.

In my opinion, too many college students don't know how to speak in public. I'm not even talking about giving speeches in front of hundreds of people, I'm just talking about having a conversation with someone they don't know. It's kinda sad sometimes. So when you meet a prof, come in prepared with some knowledge about their operation, give them a firm handshake, look them in the eye when you talk to them, and don't say too many "ums" or "likes" or "ya knows".

cool yeah for sure I will go in with knowledge about the professor and his research. I'm guessing you don't even need to have his class. Do you know any bad conversations that people have had w/ a professor when trying to get a research position? TY!
