I'm gonna be a freshman next year and I was accepted to both schools (no u.c.l.a. :( but it's all good haha). I'm facing a hard choice about which school will offer the most opportunities to get in on new, expanding research in premed or biological fields? Thanks for responses because this is a real tricky one (keep in mind: I live in Irvine and have full scholarship there and at ucsd will be around 8000 per year; and I am planning on going to medical school so i need to reserve some bank)

Bio is prominent at both universities. If you were to choose one, any of the two will offer opportunities for research to your liking. The only way one school can be better than the other is if you know a certain professor doing a certain subject of research that really interests you. Taking that into account, I'd say save the money and go to UCI. The difference between UCSD and UCI is really not much...
