It seems as though the entire CC community is infatuated with these so-called "research opportunities," especially at the undergraduate level. I understand this research to be work with a professor in a new field. But is it really that important in school choice? For instance, I'm a prospective Econ/Computer Science/Math major (some sort of combination of those). Should I care about research opportunities? I always thought that research was just for science majors, but is there other research too?

Anyone out there?

There is research in every field. What do you think professors do all the time?

Should you care about research? Nobody else can tell you. Some people love it, some people hate it.

If you decide that you want to apply for a PhD program in most fields you will have to demonstrate that you have some experience with research. Research opportunities for undergraduates can be found at a wide variety of schools. You can also sometimes find research opportunities during the summer at schools that you are not enrolled in.
