Research Science Institute 2007 Introductions

I have a question,
I'm going to apply next year and I was wondering if it was allowed to live outside campus. Like, a near-by hotel or something...

Can anyone please help me on the subject?

umm, why would you want to do that? the best part of rsi (at least socially) happens at the dorm. live at a hotel for six weeks? that's ridiculous...

Corinao,
Well, can I or can I not?

My points were: 1) social life at RSI is largely centered around living in a dorm, and 2) living at a hotel for six weeks for whatever reason (when all of your peers will live on campus) is very strange. if you can or cannot, that's up to the cee, but i highly doubt that you can.

Okay, I was just thinking about living outside the dorm because I wasn't sure about how would it be in the dorm but you convinced me. (since it's the best part of RSI) So, I guess I wouldn't have to worry.

Thank you!

i don't think any hotels are close enough to make it convenient for you to get to mit and back. plus, you would miss out on so much in terms of making friends and more. i think most rickoids get single rooms, so you don't have to worry about that. plus, living in a dorm will prepare you for college.

many of you rickoids should consider applying for issi next year. it's a pre-college program and sounds really exciting. i think most, if not all rickoids who applied got in (9/18 particpants are rickoids :D).

PLus- congrats to Mitka, who as always, pawned some serious ass. He won 1st overall ($50000- not that he needs if after sts and siemens)!!! yahhhhhh!

how was the isef breakfast for those who went?

Vanilea,
You don't know how good it felt to know that "most" Rickoids get single rooms. I hate sharing. :P Speaking of ISEF, my boyfriend went there. And I don't know what happened to him, he didn't call yet. * shocked *

You guys sure talk about breakfast a lot. LOL.

Yeah,
There was no breakfast at ISEF. We did see Matt though, kind of had an informal gathering during public exhibition day.

Mitka's pretty cool, got to meet him up on stage. It was pretty neat being on stage with all the top winners.

Congrats to all other Rickoids that one something.

See everyone in a few weeks!

ISSI sounds amazing. Who's DDPSC by the way? Oh ya, and Mitka owns.

Good question .... who is DDPSC?

Didn't want to give away too much info ... "the internet's a dangerous place".

I'm David from St. Louis. I was in Plant Science at the ISEF and am going to RSI this summer.

has anyone mailed out forms yet? I haven't started :P

also according to very reliable sources all math students have been matched to mentors by now ... but nobody else.

oh.. the plant guy. of course.

Hmmm...could you use your reliable sources to find out who my mentor is?

I hope we get our student handbook soon.

How do they select mentors? Do they post our research interests and supplements on the MIT server or something and then mentors pick?

Matt did say the math guys are matched pretty quickly because of some department head in math that's really interested in RSI. He said that the bio people have traditionally not been paired as often with MIT professors. He claimed that they were trying to change that this year ....

Sorry won not one

filletwho... "very reliable sources" = Aliona! Mentors contact students when they're good and ready, and not the other way around, sadly. DDPSC, did Matt say anything else about mentor matching at ISEF?

Not too much more. Just that some people get put into companies near MIT as well as at the traditional universities and hospitals.

I think the big message I got from him was practice Frisbee!!!!!

Apparently we've got a reputation not to protect but to build against PROMYS. Speaking of which, I just got in from training for Ultimate.

Sadly, some guys at ISEF still were able to dominate me, not a good sign.

Has anyone heard if there's going to be movement off the waitlist?

oh no, another david from st. louis? we had one last summer, and i believe he's a counselor this year. that should be fun.

wow, mitka totally just paid for all of Harvard with his competition winnings.

100,000 from Siemens, 50,000 from STS, and 50,000 from isef.

looks like i need to update the mitka vaintrob fanclub on facebook, and all you new rickoids better join it!

is mitka going to harvard? he's in a facebook group that's "if i wanted to get all a's, i would have gone to harvard?
alas, he will do great no matter where he goes.
