Has anyone sent an email to rsi@cee.org or hcbowman@cee.org and received a reply? I realized that I mailed out the wrong copy of my application, and immediately sent them an email with the right copy, but I haven't received a reply (its been two weeks). I'm just curious if RSI tends not to respond to emails, or if I'm emailing to the wrong place. Thanks.

I think they're just swamped. I got a response in like two days before apps were turned in, and it's been like four since my last email, which pointed out that I'm not a senior despite what my ap chem teacher seems to think...

haha classof09, dun go and think u r nothing compared to anyone if u had chosen astronomy... cuz if u think that u're lucky by not turning urs in... u giving me the feeling that i'm quite unlucky having turned mine in lol.

thestralnerd!!! u too? lol let's see who has a higher chance? xD im into deep space stuff like black holes and really fast stars... or at least on my apps. what did u put down? (i hope it won't make mine seem... like common sense of real astronomers xD)

Is it "harder" to get in in certain things than others? Anyone have a breakdown on how many apply for what/are accepted for what typically?

How critical is it to pick a "right" field/subfield? I like physics, bio, and chem. It doesn't really matter which field/subfield that I end up with (if I could get in) as long as within these three. But I heard that if one picks a very "popular" field, he or she might have less chance to get in.

They want people who know what they're doing in their field. They want you to have extensive experience/knowledge already; if you are confident in your abilities in multiple fields, it's possible to get a project involving all of them. As far as I know, picking a popular field does not influence your chances too much; this summer, we had easily 30+ bio projects. But... who knows?

Does anyone know, in the past, what were the more popular or applied-for fields, and what were the least applied-for fields?

As I mentioned, many people did bio projects. There were considerably less of pretty much everything else; math was probably the next most popular, followed by physics (just off the top of my head). Chemistry, computer science, engineering, and astronomy were at the lower end.

Eh, seems like there's not much biology on this list. Interesting.

MITdude! Yeah, I'm kind of leaning in the same direction- I talked about being interested in making models of compact binary systems and using that as a sounding board for theories of gravity. I think I may have overlapped too much with particle physics topics though (that was my second choice subfield)..... Anyway! We'll see. I don't think I stand a very good chance; I didn't start doing any research until this year, I went to SSP last summer but don't have any individual science fairs/olympiads...... Ugh. Hahahah, at least it sounds like it's a shot in the dark no matter how prepared someone thinks they are. :P How did you become interested in astrophysics?

ahhhh i found out about SSP too late >< lol, but summer before the last I attended Chandra Astrophysics Institute, a relatively new program at MIT. Even so i doubt i know anywhere close as u ><, cuz when u said "particle physics" i'm basically picturing my apps going into the recycle bin (and rewind, and play, and rewind, and play...) I only touched on the brief topics in astronomy... like "yeah... i like black holes... and i wonder if they hold galaxies together... yeah... dun throw my apps out plox!! no no nooooooooo!"

My topics were also more vague. I worry now that I spent too much time/space trying to come across as educated and not enough as passionate. I blew para in essay 2 completely on sounding passionate though, and it was the most "me" of them all...so hopefully the proper butterflies have been behaving.

See, I applied for applied math (ahaha no pun intended)... the thing with that is that I'm very interested in modeling, so although I do have experience in the area, my application sounded like... I want to model X and Y and Z... and basically very stupid. I don't have ISEF or USAMO or anything either. SSP 2007 represent! though Ojai is better... and I don't have much else.. :/

anyone has ISEF or USAMO? i got nothing...
