you guys all seem like crazy overachieving geniuses...... lol still don't know if i should be applying, don't have any overly stellar qualifications for it.... does anyone sorta/kinda how you should be academically and what should you have done extra curricularly to at least have a shot at getting in?

@ EverLane - nothing... decent grades, decent PSAT. You only need passion.

and a whole host of extracurricular activities thats enough to make anyone looking at it think you havnt slept in a long long time? >.< just joking... a bit. i mean im decent in my school. but i have a feeling put up against what i've seen here, is there really a chance the rsi people would choose someone with an above average record over someone with all them awards and achievements? ... i used to live in a rural appalachia region with not much to offer in terms of science programs and what not. but moved to massachusetts (boston area) this year. i forsee tough competition...

^
A USAMO qual with a 235 PSAT was rejected
A former MOSP qual with a 240 PSAT and a USNCO participant and had ISEF and research experience was rejected

... The essays count...

A 217 PSAT w/ a UW 3.7 GPA w/ AIME score of 4

EC

Member of 2 science club, and 2 engineering clubs, president of 3 of them got in.

Hey! I'm a 2008 Rickoid. I remember the whole application process, and I promise you, it's totally worth it if you are accepted. RSI is an incredible experience.

My biggest piece of advice to all the applicants: Have fun with the essays. Be yourself. Don't be afraid to be frank and don't forget that the application process is more than just test scores. Numbers are important, but they aren't everything. Enjoy the process. RSI is far too selective for anyone to stake any self-worth or value on. So give it a shot! Have fun. Best of luck to all of you!

Best wishes from RSI '08.

Double post, my bad. I was losing my internet connection and hit the 'submit' button multiple times. Anyway, 2x as much good luck! haha

Okay...I was skimming some of the posts on here, and just to clarify, as far as I understand RSI uses no quotas. Decisions are based purely on academic merit. The "1 student per state" rumor seems wrong, as there were five kids from Cali at RSI last year, a many states without representation at RSI.

omg finally another rickoid :)... i've been waiting for another one since gblob has been carrying all the wait recently

Did Evan O'dorney go to RSI?!

uggghhhh... that kid seems like an a**hole. No offense to anyone who likes him , if that is even possible.

Dude O Dorney's actually a fine guy if you get to know him, he's not arrogant at all relative to his accomplishments...

^^Sorry for double posting, but I'm sure that he could waltz right in to RSI, sadly I don't think there is a single Junior this year as qualified as him...

I'm sorry but i have to disagree, logical

OK Perhaps there is no good reason fo rme to apply: other than the fact that a 0.5% chance of getting into RSI is worth 50 bucks.

And wasn't there a soph earlier on the threadataBox or something. Well, a soph like that SHOULD apply, i'd think.

I don't see myself getting into RSI, it's a relatively unreachable dream...

Hi everyone! I've been reading this thread for awhile and I've noticed that everyone here is so motivated and enthusiastic about science/math/rsi. I come from a small rural school, and I hardly meet anyone so motivated. I just want to say I really admire everyone's dedication and interest here.

I was thinking of applying to rsi..and I completed one question so far. But, compared to everyone else here I feel really inadequate. My stats and test scores are pretty good..but reading about how everyone uses .25 margins and size 10 font really intimidates me haha. how do you guys write so much??

hmm I don't know if I should still apply. I would really like to go, but the chances seem..slim.
any advice??

"A USAMO qual with a 235 PSAT was rejected

you sure? are your sure it wanst after they got rejected that they made usamo and unsco? cause many people make it junior year...

i doubt MOSP+240+USNCO+ISEF will ever get rejected, no matter how bad they are at essays, infact i dont think MOSP+220+USNCO will get rejected

as for me im probably not gonna get in either...if i only had done a research project this year...but now im gonna have to pray to get in...

hey imustbecrazy, you are from texas right? mind asking what city? sugar land? cause they are loaded...like with former mathcounts champs and siemens regioinal finalists

oh yea Potential, did you do Siemens right after RSI? Or is it not possible to complete project for Siemens from RSI, since its only 5 weeks or so.

also, Potential, what school did you get into? Any EAs? Possibly MIT? (Just wondering because everyone says RSI-guarentee top university like harvard, mit, stanford...)
Also, doing Intet STS? If not siemens.

and would you just list some basic stats that you had that were crucial in getting you in? really good recs (or think they were good)?

Thanks

Also, yea i was checking out some old threads from AOPS and a 2008 IMO Gold Medalist was rejected by RSI his junior year...go figure (he was gold medalist after senior year, but was usamo in 10th grade)

i am a former mopper; who are you from aops, hipeople?

i read through the thread, about evan odorney: he is not arrogant. at all. regardless of his achievements. He's actually very introverted; he came across poorly in that interview because, as someone here mentioned, he has Aspergers...

Anyway, my question may have been skipped over, I'll just reask it: where did you guys start with your "long range goals"? Is talking about something at the end of this school year too soon?

oh also, imustbecrazy said he is from coppell (not sugarland)

Hey everyone! I was also a 2008 Rickoid (Hi Potential!)

Good luck on the application; be straightforward! RSI is the most ballin' time ever, hands down.

Hey, HiPeople! Yeah, I did do Siemens. It's tough to revise your paper in the short amount of time between RSI and Siemens, but it's definitely do-able.

I actually didn't apply anywhere EA.

Yep, I did do Intel STS.

Try not to get too hung up on the numbers, but if it helps, I got a 2400 SAT, 238 PSAT, and by the end of my sophomore year, I had taken 8 APs-all 5s.

Oh, I also invented water. ;)
Don't stress too much.
