Sorry if I sound ignorant, but what do you do when you research? Do you actually give suggestions to the professionals and apply your knowledge and all that? What's a day like?
I've also wondered how the professionals themselves determine what research they want to do. I know they research what interests them...but they're really trying to discover something new, right? So...how do they really go about it? Just experiment after experiment? Where do they start? I think I'm getting ahead of myself...so...I guess never mind about that. A lot of you have had many more experiences than me, and I'd just like to know how it is for you...what you've learned from these professionals.
I suppose I'm sort of blabbering...so yeah...what's research for a high school student like?

Tbone

well, pros determine what research they do from experience and reading. If you're familiar with a field, then you can identify potential problems, etc and go tackle them. Also, what you do when you're doing research depends on what type of research you do. If you're doing bio research, you might be culturing bacteria. Or trying to find a certain gene. If you're doing engineering research it might consist of basically trying to build something; maybe designing and building mechanical and electrical hardware. Computer Science research, you might try to design some new algorithm. Math research, you're usually trying to prove something. I would suggest going on wikipedia, trying to find things that interest you, and then do a general literature search on it.

It's different at every school at my school, It's a physics class.
