How many of you guys actually participate in an internship/research during the school year? I find that I don't have enough time to be a full time engineering student and then go and participate in another academic activity, do most of you just save it for the summer and find an internship/research position? I mean I have the time, but I just need some time for myself too.

Also how many hrs per week (including work you do at home or what not) do you usually spend on these internships/research, during school or summer.
Thanks.

During the summer, at my internship, I was full-time, which means I worked 40 hours a week at least, sometimes more. Of course, I don't work that much when I am in school. Last spring, I worked 15 hours a week.

As far as research, I did some environmental engineering related research from March 2005 to December 2005. They were very gracious about working around my schedule, as long as the research got taken care of. This was my only activity, as I found it far more rewarding towards my career than other extracurricular activities.

I'd advise you to focus on internships and research as your only extracurricular activity. Leave the rest of the time for your academics and for yourself. See how it works out, and adjust if necessary.
