Many of those who get accepted into good science/math schools such as Cornell, Duke, or Johns Hopkins have some sort of research done (usually over a summer).

How exactly does one go about getting started with official research? Where do you go to get a research program set up? Do you just walk up to a local college and tell them you are interested in research for the summer?

Those of you who have done research over a summer: will you please explain how exactly you get started?

I was 16 and refused to work in a baseball or tourist shop. I went to the research institute at my hospital...asked if they would be interested in hiring a high school student and they matched me up with my mentor...and I've been doing research with him ever since :-)

I just finished my first year and I'm interested in responses as well. I have particular preferences for the type of research I do. I'm an economics major with an environmental focus, and I'm interested in researching renewable energy/ energy markets. Do I have a good chance of being able to do research specific to my career interests? Also, does anyone know if Cornell's Center of Sustainability has positions open for undergraduates?

Thanks much.
