Residence hall vs on-campus apartments at TMC?

What’s the positives/negatives of a residence hall vs on-campus apartment?
Which is better to live in if you want to focus on your academics? Which is better socially? Which is closer to the OVT and which is closer to your classes? I hear that dorming at TMC has the possibility of ocean views. Do the residence halls or on-campus apartments have more ocean views? If your going to TMC, where are you going to stay at and why?

I would also really like to cook my own (maybe even roommates meals haha) meals at least once a week since I’m a major cooking buff…is this possible at the residence halls?

If you're an incoming freshman, you don't get to live in the on-campus apartments unless there are extenuating circumstances.. ie you applied late and something really weird and extraneous happened and they could put you there.

I'm pretty sure marshall apts do not have ocean view, because the buildings are small and spread out, they're like 2 stories. A lot of the res hall rooms have ocean views, and they're definitely closer to OVT. Not like the apts are that much farther, but dang, OVT is like walking out of your res hall and into the cafeteria practically! If you look at a map of UCSD, there are 2 sets of marshall apts... lower apts and upper apts that are kinda scattered out... They're both pretty close to the res halls anyway, so it's not like it matters where you're classes are. Chances are, you're gonna have to travel about the same distance.

It's a lot harder to live in apartments and meet a lot of new people, which you want to do. When you live in res halls, you have a whole suite of people that you're constantly around, and it's a good social atmosphere. As for focusing academically... I mean, whatever, it's the same either way.

There should be a kitchen in the dorms, although I'm not 100% sure about it. You should check it out at admit day.

Well, really, honestly, you shouldn't live in apts your 1st year, and most likely, you won't get it anyway.

Hope I answered some questions at least!

Wow, thanks for all the info. Lesser social atmosphere and no ocean views...I don't think this will be a hard choice.

psst... dru! since you're a cooking buff, hook this fellow Marshall up with the meals, ok? i haven't decided where to go yet and if i do decide to go to UCSD, i'll probably get stuck in the fleets because i turned my SIR in late. and that's going to suck so badly... grr...

i wish the other school just rejected me so i can go to UCSD guilt-free.
