Residence halls for Design students

DD has been accepted to Iowa State and is looking at options before she decides. If anyone here is a design student or is a parent of one, could you tell me which residence halls at ISU are favored by students in the College of Design?

DD's intended major is Industrial Design. She likes to have a social life, but does not seem to care for loud parties or gatherings with too many people. She plays guitar and ukulele during her free time and enjoys good art and music; a bit of a "hippie" in her style. Does not seem to be interested in sororities.

Thanks in advance for any pointers.

ISU has a Residential Learning Community for Design Majors.

[Residential Learning Communities | Department of Residence - Housing](http://www.housing.iastate.edu/places/rlc-th/rlc?id=10)

ISU also posts the demographics for each residence hall…avg ACT score, college that they are enrolled in, instate or OOS, m/F, etc. You could look through all of the halls and see which ones have the highest % of Design students.

I am guessing that you will want a res hall within the Union Drive Association on west campus which are close to the College of Design facilities. Although Linden Hall is on the east side of campus and houses part of the Res Learning Design Community (along with Friley on the west side).

Longtime lurker on CC, I had to register to respond to this one.

Hmmm, daughter accepted to Design at IA State, social life but not necessarily loud parties, not interested in a sorority, guitar, art, music, “hippie”. I think you just described MY daughter! (Always described my daughter as rather “bohemian”) Not only that, but it sounds like we’re relatively close MomChicago. We’re far west suburbs! Strange world, indeed. (Did anyone say “carpool”?)

I would second what Haystack said regarding the Learning Community (Design Exchange). My daughter (interior design, I’m the industrial design guy) is very excited about the Design Exchange. I know they have one in both Friley and Linden, but she chose Friley as it’s SO much closer to the Design School. Linden is on the other side of campus. If your daughter’s interested in the DE I would encourage her to get her housing set up ASAP. I think it’s first come, first served, and you either have to do that or take a separate class FR year.

you have to do one or the other, either residential or non-residential, so my daughter is really looking forward to meeting the other design freshmen. I know the DE also takes a trip up to MN at some point to visit design firms, museums, etc.

Fun stuff. I’m still shaking my head at the similarities between our daughters . . .

Haystack and DesignDad : Thank you so very much for the Design Exchange links. Looks to be a neat program to make meaningful associations with like-minded students.

DesignDad: What a riot that is…My first post on CC and I get a response from a parent whose child fits my kid’s description…I see car-pools in our future, indeed!

Got it - Friley or Linden, and Friley is closer to the design school. Thanks again for all the useful info sent my way.
