Well, I won a one-year automatic entrance scholarship for $3000. When I go to "View Housing Status", it says "Offer Type: G2 - Guarantee Offer - Scholarship". Beside New Residence it Hall, there is a comment saying "(Please note that single rooms at New Res are reserved for scholarship winners and returning students. Scholarship winners who wish to live at New Res should rank this line as #1 and they will be assigned to a single room)." Does this mean that all scholarship winners should do this, or does this only apply to major entrance scholarship winners? Also, what exactly does "G2 - Guarantee Offer - Scholarship" mean?

Yeah, im kind of confused now. When I called McGill they the rep told me that this year, guaranteed halls were only for major entrance awards (but it didnt seem like she knew what she was doing…). So now I check Minerva and it has “G2-guarantee offer”…Weird.

ya…that’s what it says on my housing status as well. Are guaranteed first-choice housing for major entrance scholarship recipients, or for those who get the $3000? I find that really confusing b/c I don’t know what they mean by “scholarship”: basic or major?

PS. what does G2 stand for?

I am a $3000 scholarship winner as well. It says in the letter I received about my scholarship that I had guaranteed selection of the residence of my choice. I would assume that this includes the New Residence but it does seem strange that a Mcgill Rep would say that it is reserved for major scholarship winners.

Hmmm, well I went on their undergraduate residences website ([Undergraduate residences](http://www.mcgill.ca/residences/undergraduate/)) and it says this: “First-year undergraduate students of any age who receive major entrance scholarships are further guaranteed that they will be assigned to the residence hall of their choice.”

Which is why I’m so confused…Lol.

Yeah, I agree, this is confusing.

From what I’ve read, it seems like all scholarship winners (basic and major) are guaranteed housing for their first year…and then it gets tricky about first choice housing. I’ve read that only major scholarship winners are guaranteed their first choice (but I’ve heard that basic scholarship winners are guaranteed too?)…so I’m not sure…but it seems like that’s the case.

Well everyone is guaranteed housing their first year scholarship or not. I certainly hope basic scholarship winners are guaranteed their first choice since I’ve heard some of the older residences aren’t very nice.

I think I might have found something, though not exactly what we were looking for. But where you get to pick your first choice of housing it says that single rooms in New Rez Hall (yay!) are reserved for scholarship winners (basic and major) and returning students… The OTHER rep I called today says that G2 should mean residence of your choice. I dunno, maybe they’re just not prepared for us yet or something haha

Does it really say “basic and major” in parentheses like that?

Sigh, I guess I should have re-read it before I got my hopes up… Next to New Rez. Hall all it says is: (Please note that single rooms at New Res are reserved for scholarship winners and returning students. Scholarship winners who wish to live at New Res should rank this line as #1 and they will be assigned to a single room). Thats that exact quote… No one even at McGill really seems to know what the heck is going on right now! sorry for the misleading comment lol!

Annnd here I am again :p. Its pretty official now that a G2 offer means a guaranteed spot in the RESIDENCE OF YOUR CHOICE. Finally got a reply to my email to housing:

Hi,

You are guaranteed the hall of your choice with a G2 offer, so if you
want a New Res single, then you will be assigned one.

Sincerely,

Kam
Residence Admissions

Pretty cool, eh? :)

Awesome to know, thank you!

I did read over the letter I received though and from the wording I definitely thought that is what they were implying. Its good to know for sure though!

It’s because new res singles are really nice and hard to get, so they want you to know that you’ll be able to get ANY residence of your choice (b/c you are a scholarship person), including the coveted 1 room at New Rez.

btw, new res isn’t that nice anyway. far away from campus :P

Hey how much you pay?

did they change the policy this year? because i got an automatic entrance scholarship of $3000 and i’m in the regular pool…

I believe the housing preference is for major scholarship recipients, not sure if this is a change:
“First-year undergraduate students of any age who receive major renewable entrance scholarships are further guaranteed that they will be assigned to the residence hall of their choice. Scholarship students must pay their residence deposit before midnight on June 15 (Montreal time), in order to confirm their space in residence.”

I’m just wondering: what sort of stats do you guys have to receive such scholarships?

I got $3000 and my BC high school curriculum average for grade 12 was 96.6%

Guaranteed first-choice in housing is for the major renewable scholarships, which are the ones you fill an application for. I’m unsure if they just changed it for this year or the OP was just lucky. I’m also in the regular pool for housing and have the entrance scholarship so there’s no mistake on yours, numberguy.

Also, all scholarship recipients (the one-time entrance scholarship included) have priority in registering for classes (Last time I read about it, it was one day in advance).
