Residency comes next

@WayOutWestMom Hope New Year brings the best for both D1 & D2.

FYI. Today marks a milestone  Just paid the final tuition fees for education from 529 account. Presume though medical kids keep studying (residency / fellowship) there is no need to pay any fees. My D is back home to relax for holidays, though it is a 4 weeks block for residency interviews. Hoping she matches to one of the 4 top choices she is contemplating. Vanderbilt, UTSW, UCSD, USC in that order. Any suggestions / inputs on these programs if any for Internal Medicine.

@thumper1 - thatā€™s fabulous that sheā€™s almost done! D finished two years of residency and is now in her first of two years of research. Then comes three more years of residency. Long way to go still! She has been enjoying the research year thus far. She moonlights quite a bit too and is liking the fact that they get paid very handsomely for their shifts.

That rank order needs to be hersā€¦and really hers alone. She has done the research about these programs and interviewed. She needs to clarify the rank order herself.

All we did was look at the ever changing rank order list, and smile and nod!

We never did anything with Med School or Residency applications/ranking other than be cheerleaders. Itā€™s my sonā€™s life, not mine. He knows what he likes/wants/prefers, and so far, heā€™s quite pleased (2nd year of Residency) which means weā€™re happy too.

I hope everyone and their applicants are enjoying some well-deserved downtime. D has one interview left in January. She is off from school for a month. Well, sheā€™s already been off about 10 or so days of her month. This week D was awarded a pretty significant unexpected merit scholarship from her school which will pretty much pay for her entire 4th year of tuition and fees. H and I are so happy for her!! We are getting ready to set sail on a cruise for the holidays with D, her H and other family members. I hope interview season is going well for your kids! Happy Holidays!

Thatā€™s wonderful news about the scholarship. Please do keep us posted about her residency match when the time comes.

Not really unusual at this school. My younger D got the same scholarship.

Why do they give it in the middle of the year? What are they recognizing - first 3 years of performance?

Scholarship is awarded at a ceremony in mid-October. The scholarship is awarded on the basis of a faculty nomination for academics, scholarship and leadership. Nominees are asked to write an essay to support their nomination at the beginning of the fall term and winners are selected by a committee of alumni & faculty.

A detailed look at the results for US-IMGs and non-US IMGs did during the last residency match.

Good luck to your candidates. Rank list submission opens Feb 1.

This is an interesting document, thanks.

SIL still has 3 more interviews in January. He has 10 IM IV and 3 FM IV total. He is very happy with the opportunities he has and has a solid rank order list.

The family is surprised at how his geographic preferences affected his IV offers. Most of his IV are in our home state or very close by.

Also pleasantly surprised at the effectiveness of LOI. He wrote 10 personal LOI and received 3 interviews as a result.

Looking forward to Match Day! Canā€™t believe itā€™s almost here.

How are Canadian citizens considered during the match?

As internationals since they need a visa to work in the US as residents.

if they graduated from a non-US, non-Canadian med school they are considered FMGs.

Canadian citizen graduates of Canadian medical schools may need to get permission from government/provinicial officials if they want to leave Canada to do a residency in the US.

Does NRMP stats include Canadian residencies?

I am reading this line for internal medicine and not sure they add up correctly when I look at all applicants vs positions and how many didnā€™t match.

Internal Medicine 9,809 11,598 1.18 1,054 755 1,809 2,431 1,769 4,200

Totals for FMGs unmatched is 2500+ while the difference between applicants and positions is only around 1800.

On the other hand, it is amazing that there are 2400 Non US FMGs matching to IM.

Does NRMP stats include Canadian residencies?

No. Canada has its own separate Matchā€“CaRMS. Those who apply to the Canadian match take different standardized exams (MCCQE) than the US (USMLE or COMLEX).

As for your second question, the applicant number includes those who withdrew from the Match or did not submit a rank listā€“usually because they didnā€™t get any interviews.

2400 out of 12087 R1 IM positions is <2%. So in the larger picture, there arenā€™t a huge number of FMGs who find positions in US IM programs.

2400 out of 9800 positions is almost 25%.

There are 12,087 R1 positions according to ABIM.

This is the row in the document

Internal Medicine 9,809 11,598 1.18 1,054 755 1,809 2,431 1,769 4,200

The first number 9809 is listed under the title - Total
Positions
Preferred Specialty Offered

That means there are ~3000 residency positions offer outside of the Match. Through the military match, for example, and at programs that fill their positions directly, not thru the NRMP.
