I don’t think this is the same scholarship. D did not write an essay and did not apply for this other than filling out a FAFSA each year. It was awarded two weeks ago (not in October) via a congratulatory phone call from the financial aid office and then in a follow-up email.
Happy dance!
D2 got a contract for her first post-fellowship job. She basically got her dream job. (And at 150% of the salary her academic hospital was offering!)
How wonderful!! How many more months are left in her fellowship?
Fellowship ends early June, I think.
DS is done with pre-clinical and started rotations earlier this month. Pretty soon we will be talking about residency
It’s an exciting but nerve wracking time!
Not stressed as much as we did for MD admissions
Wait…
I just sent you a message!
Thought he wanted an extra year!
No comment on that

And after residency come fellowships or jobs. Just thought I’d check in here. In 2020, we were waiting for the residency match…and all of our daughters matched well!
My daughter is finishing her ED residency this year. She starts a fellowship at UConn Medical School on July 1.
They ARE having a residency graduation event on June 15…I’m sure they know that this group did not have a medical school graduation in person. We are so looking forward to attending. Funny….her last shift is actually June 16…and of course no one would swap with her!
Luckily, she doesn’t have to relocate to a different place. No move involved this time!
She is very excited about this fellowship. It’s a two year program, and she will be getting her masters in public health as part of the program.
My D still has just over 2 years to finish her triple board. She won’t start thinking about what to do after residency for another year or 15 months.
Technically she will have two graduations, one at the end of the 4th year (2024) for pediatrics and one at the end of the 5th year (2025) for both adult and child psychiatry. She can take her pediatrics exams at the end of the 4th year if she wants to and she probably will in order to spread them out a bit.
She said the peds “graduation” is not a big deal, just sort of a marker, because she can not say she graduated from a residency until she is all the way done with a residency, which won’t happen until the end of the 5th year.
I have a nephew in law and a niece that are both doctors and they both had residency graduations, one before COVID and one during COVID. I think they have always been a thing, but maybe more of a thing for our kids since COVID erased their med school graduations.
Too many years to go yet for my D. But she was honored last year with an award during the med school graduation at her residency school - so she got to wear her regalia!
Need to ask when my D’s graduation event is where family will be invited. They sent a chair last week (I think it might be rocking since it came with additional pieces) with the school logo on it! It is a lot more than what she got from medical school!
That’s very nice! I don’t think my kid’s residency sends gifts…but a little ceremony and reception is perfect!
Popping here to say that D matched today! I was confident that she would match, but it’s still nice to know there wasn’t some kind of oddity or bad luck going on. Now comes the wait until Friday to find out where.
@icuinNm woohoo!! Please do pop in and let us know how she did…not the specific place, but maybe what rank order number she matched to.
Such an exciting week. And this year’s students can have a match day celebration!!
Will do!
I am curious what do people mean by top residency? Is it college/program or high paying specialty? Same question about competitive residency?
This varies by doctor. My kid did residency at an academically affiliated hospital that was her number one ranked program. So for her, that was the top residency!
High paying what? Residencies aren’t typically “high paying”.
Some folks want to be at residencies that are academic programs, and some care more about other things.
@WayOutWestMom please respond to this one!
