S is now considering doing a service year between college and grad school. Looking for resources on potential programs. He was given a listing by the campus office, most of which have religious affiliations. That's not a problem, in itself, but I'm wondering if there are any other good resources out there?

Peace Corps?( more than one year)
How old is he?
Americorps also has programs.
Grad schools also love it when you have work experience.

He only wants to do one year, and there are limitations on where he can go. I think he prefers the idea of something in the states or Europe.

What kind of skills and interests does he have?

Probably interested in working in some type of teaching capacity (adults or secondary, not elementary). He is also experienced with computers, and will have a psychology undergrad.

Americorps, has lots of different options for a year of service, and in many different fields.

Match Corps, if he is interested in tutoring/mentoring in schools

City Year

Teach for America, although it is a two year commitment

In Europe, the Spanish and French governments sponsor American college grads to teach English in public schools

For international, there will be lots more options in South/Central America, Africa or Asia, although most focus on teaching English

The Fulbright Program has grants for English teaching abroad, like those mentioned above: <a href=“US Fulbright Program - English Teaching Assistant Awards”>http://us.fulbrightonline.org/about/types-of-grants/english-teaching-assistant-grants

If he is not yet 24, CityYear has involvement in schools.

Any loans he has would be deferred while serving and after completion he will recieve a voucher to apply toward education loans or tuition.

^Some of these are PAID volunteer experiences. S definitely needs something that will pay HIM a small stipend and basic living expenses, as we are not paying for his existence after May.

Just noting that deadlines for Fulbright and City Year have passed, likely Americorps and TFA, too. Hope you find a good opp for him. These are enriching all around. Another idea is the College Bound type programs.

I’m surprised that deadlines have passed, when both my kids applied, it was in early spring for the upcoming fall.
CityYears deadline was end of Sept, however NCCC which youngest was accepted to, doesn’t close till end of April of next year.

Would he be interested in teaching English? We know kids who did this in China (no second language needed), and in France (had to have french skills)…one year commitment.

What about WWOOF? It’s a little more… rustic than he may want but it’s basically working on organic farms in other countries in exchange for housing and a small stipend. http://www.wwoof.net/

My D’s Bff from high school did the WOOF program in Italy and loved it. Not really a teaching component involved but a great experience.
