Response Pad - Clicker ?

Does anyone know if the model # matter for the "clicker" from Turning Technologies ? The Syllabus says get a " Response pad (also called the “clicker”; Turning Technologies XR model)," , found some RC-XR01 and RC-XR02 on ebay. Vandy store has the latest RC-XR03. Does it matter what model ? BTW, how does this even work . TIA

We have the same question!
DS commented that he read somewhere about a smart phone can be used instead. Is that true?

@4beardolls - I think Vandy recommends the clicker or ResponseWare which is a s/w for your smartphone. The s/w is free but you have to pay license. How well it works idk. I am hoping @pancaked will answer the clicker question

I would imagine any RC-XR model would work. I cannot see the system being any different for 01 vs 02 vs 03. But I am not certain.

How much is the license?

Store; - Shows 1 , 2, 4 year licenses per student as : $19, $30, $40 respectively. Apparently there is a school code too associated with classes where this can be used but I couldn’t find this info

The new one is $53.35 at BN. If we can’t sort out the issues regarding model and license before school starts, Can the student wait until after first class and get answers then go to BN to buy it?

Yes, student can wait for the first class or email the professor. Some professors use the clickers to take attendance in large lectures; even if this is the case, there will be a grace period for people to get their clicker.

@pancaked - is any model okay ? The syllabus just says XR clicker

My son said the clicker required by his Bio lab last year was a specific model which he bought at the school book store. His Econ class this year requires the same clicker so at least he’ll get more use out of it.

Does the app work as effectively as the clicker? Someone on the 2018 page mentioned that classes in Wilson are not equipped to work with the responseware app

It may be a different system. I remember having one brand of clicker for Wilson and another brand for Stevenson.

Did anyone confirm that the smartphone app is acceptable to use? And if so, do you know the subscription fee?

Not sure which class you have but Chem 102A syllabus lists ResponseWare as acceptable alternative to clicker. . I found this:
https://www.nursing.vanderbilt.edu/tools/help/ResponseWare_Quick_Guide.pdf</a>
Which gives the Vandy code for licensing - 1 year $15 , 4 years - $32

Thanks, it is for Physics 116A.

Don’t know about the app, but we were in the Vandy bookstore on Sunday and the textbook department manager told us that there is only one clicker that’s being used this semester.

idk. I don’t trust the Vandy B&N guys. i think they are pretty unethical. When trying to buy books, it showed both Used and New prices and I selected Used and also at checkout the option to NOT substitute with New books if Used not available. Guess what, I ended up with New books ( wasn’t worth the hassle of arguing and changing etc). When I went back online for the SAME books, it shows Used being available at B&N. I am sure some unsuspecting student selected Used and ended up with a New one. Bait and Switch.

The professor said that app was OK to use. I’m not sure why they wouldn’t communicate that more rather than having someone buy a $50 device.

My S’s professor gave the OK to go with the app which my s did. Glad he had waited.

My S got the app as well. He got the 4 year license since it was still cheaper than buying the device and he may be able to use it at least one more time.
