Results of Early Decision

I applied to JHU under ED. How are we informed about acceptance to JHU? Does the admission committee inform the applicants once the decision has been made or does it wait and inform all the applicants at the same time? Thanks.

Everyone gets a letter on December 15...i think...yah after 1 month basically...

So I guess you don't find out as soon as the admission committee decides? Some school go on and let the applicant know as soon as the committee decides.

True, but they don't have the time to e-mail a person after reading his or her application whether or not its a deferred/accepted/denied. What they do is they mark it, and move on to the next applicant. Once they've finished reading, they can mass mail all the letters according to the piles of deferred/accepted/denied. Some schools even warn you in advance by phone, happened to my couzin.

what they do is they mail out all of our letters through the postal service and then when they get that out, they mass email us all. So depends on what you want to do: you could wait for the letter or you could go straight to your inbox!

As of right now the plan is to release all Early Decision notifications by December 15. All decisions are released on the same day, both by postal mail and email. We do not release decisions on a "rolling basis" because decisions are not finalized until we mail notifications. The Admissions Committee will spend every last minute finalizing decisions ... final decisions are not rendered on applicants after just the first read.

If you want to know more about how decisions are released, you should read these two Hopkins Insider blog posts from last December:

Hopkins Insider: Down to the Wire...

Hopkins Insider: Notes on the Release of Early Decision Notifications

Wow, I just read through some of the stats in the comments section of "Notes on the Release.." 202 people were flat out denied last year during the ED round?

Yes, not all students who apply ED who are not offered admission are deferred into the RD round. We will deny ED applicants. We will only defer ED students to RD if they have a legitimate chance of being admitted later on.

Very cool blog entry. I really like the whole "we release it when you will most likely be home" idea.

I hate checking for programs' results (or those of test scores) and clicking refresh 1000 times per minute in the computer lab while I'm supposed to be in 6th...

But, if the admissions office decides to adjust the time this year, I think most of us are home at 7 AM EST ;-)

Yeah, I knew that some ED applicants were denied in the ED round, but man. I didn't expect it to be such a high number :-p

I was looking at the calendar and 15th of December is a Saturday. Does time really matter if its Saturday?

We have not made any decisions yet about what time we release the Early Decision notifications. We actually have even had the discussion yet ... we are more focused on evaluating applications right now. We did not decide about the release of decisions at 6:00pm EST by email last year until a couple of days before decision day. It is fruitless to speculate about these questions right now ... just be patient and when there is news to announce I will post it to the Hopkins Insider blog.

I remember last year my RD decision was sent to a family e-mail address that I didn't have the password for so I had to wait an additional 2 hours for that decision. Oh god that was brutal. And worse, my friend called me to say that he was waitlisted and somebody I disliked was accepted.
