Hey I'm a senior heading to college this fall. All the workstudy jobs seem to ask for a resume but I've never had a job before so I don't have any work experience to put on my resume. My concern is that my resume is pretty "empty" right now. What does a person with no prior work experience write on a resume? Should I take up a job this spring/summer so I can get some work experience under my belt?

If you have done any volunteering, you can list that together with brief description of your responsibilities.

If you’ve held any positions of responsibility at your school (class officer, club officer, office assistant), you can list those along with a brief description of your duties for that position.

If you have any special skills (like office skills, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, first aid certification, etc), you can list those.

If you’re applying for a laboratory positions w/s, you can list your high school science classes and what kinds of lab skills you learned in them.

One thing to remember about resumes, “one size fits all” doesn’t apply. You will need to tailor your resume for the kind of job you’re applying for. For example, you wouldn’t mention lab skills if you’re applying for an office job.

And getting apart time job for the spring might be a good idea. It will help you learn how to balance work and school before you get to college.
