First of all, please excuse me for posting a lot. I’m the first student of my high school who applies to American universities; therefore, all my teachers are inexperienced and cannot advise me.
I highly appreciate your help!
I used all 10 activity fields on CommonApp. The space was sufficient to list my major activities and briefly describe them.
However, I feel like my activities seemed much more impressive on my résumé. So I’m hesitant whether I should include a résumé.
Pro: I have more space to describe my activities more specifically, especially my duties at my previous jobs.
Con: I would just repeat a major part of information which can be elsewhere found in my application.
(PS: I have a recommendation letter from a former boss and my main essay is an anecdote from a work experience, but it doesn’t reflect any significant duties or responsibilities.)
I would seriously review your major activities and eliminate those that take up less time than you use in the bathroom (see my post from another thread)
@gibby I cannot put it in words how thankful I am for all your insightful responses!!!
Do these “20 hours a week” also include the weekend?
Another question: When I was 16 I have lived alone for a year during high school and had to take care of our house. It took me about 2-3 hours per week to do the grocery shopping and all the household chores (in- and outside the house).
One of my recommender mentions that I’ve lived alone.
Should I nonetheless mention it in the activities section under “Family Responsibilities”?
Not sure about you, but both my kids spent about 3-4 hours per day on the weekend studying or writing papers, and some additional time at sports practice. So, yes the 20 hours includes the weekend.
And yes, you can use one of the 10 spaces on the EC list for “Family Responsibilities.” Adding a short note explaining: “Lived alone, spent 2-3 hours per week grocery shopping and doing chores”
