Resume

I was wondering if any aspiring premeds about to apply to medical school would like to share their resumes? I am trying to get started on the process of building my college resume and have no idea where to start and was hoping to get some ideas.

Try looking on MD Apps to see actual resumes from current & past applicants.

Generally, you should have ECs that include all the following areas:

research experience (bench or clinical)
community service–particularly with those who are less fortunate than you
clinical volunteering
physician shadowing
leadership positions
tutoring/teaching/coaching

Med school adcomms prefer to see long-term commitments in volunteer positions.

Ideally all your ECs should reflect your interests and help paint a coherent portrait of you/your interests & personality.

@WayOutWestMom how would you suggest going about consistant community service during the undergraduate year and during the summer

Find an organization that you’re interested in working with and volunteer regularly with them.

It could be spending one morning a month stacking cans at a food pantry, or one hour a week visiting with elderlies at a nursing home. The important thing is to be of service to other who are less fortunate than yourself. (And that generally means you need to get off campus…)

What adcomms don’t want is a resume full of one-shot/one-day volunteer projects.

"have no idea where to start and was hoping to get some ideas. " - talk to your pre-med adviser, much better source for your specific situation than anybody here.

I found premed advisor at my son’s school pretty useless. The info I found on this forum was much more useful.

Another tip would be try to looking at essay/supplement topics for med schools (google search or go to med school admissions website) and answer their questions with real life examples. And then try to “reverse-engineer” by finding activities where you can get those experiences. Just a thought experiment.

You need to become familiar with the CC equivalent for pre-meds, studentdoctor. net (SDN). It has lots of info from pre-meds, med students, residents, med admissions staff and doctors on the forums.
