Retainers?

Are permanent retainer devices put in after braces disqualifying?

I am in the same boat. My ortho is taking out my perm and the giving me a temp one for night time use. I think all metal as to come out of your mouth.

Dental standards
... If you are undergoing active orthodontic treatment that will not be completed prior to your entry into the Naval Academy, you may request a waiver, but they are not ordinarily granted. The Naval Academy Dental Clinic provides comprehensive dental care for the Brigade of Midshipmen. Current orthodontic appliances for continued treatment are disqualifying. Retainer appliances are permissible, provided that active orthodontic treatment has been satisfactorily completed.

My Mid was not disqualified for having a permanent retainer, nor did he need a waiver.

I can report the same experience. We had never used permanent retainers with our older 4 braces-kiddos, but once we had one heading to USNA, we asked our orthodontist to put in a permanent retainer - which he did. She had no problems with DoDMERB or since about this issue.

ok i had my medical today and i went to the eye doctor before whats the nest step...everything for me was normal as the doctor told me....whats the next step because im going on vacation to london on sunday and i need to finish it...thanks you all

update123...I don't want you to have a ruined vacation, but just because your doctor says: "no prob" does not mean you passed DoDMERB. Our Navy Doctor told us the same thing and then we had a 'remedial' issue over her mild eye far-sightedness that needed follow-up. We, being the newbies we were then, had NO IDEA when we looked on the Dodmerb site and saw highlighted in red..."REMEDIAL" whether this was serious news or not. So the doctor's report is a great sign, but you will have to let DoDMERB weigh in on the website, (your file) that this is so.

Thank you very much but I'll keep checking during the vacation, ince again thanks for the advice

Let me finish the story by saying the 'remedial' was that her vision in one eye was 20/20 and in the other 20/35....and at that point in time USNA wanted 20/20 in both, hence the 'remedial'....Now they've changed the requirements to being beyond 20/40 in both eyes before this same 'remedial' is noted....so I wanted to add that in case other families were worried about their own situations. We had to get an eye exam from a local optometrist, who submitted the forms to DoDMERB and she passed DodMERB within 1 week of that submission.
