Hi, I got a 2190 in the SAT and I'm wondering whether I should retake in December (applying RD) or simply focus on school work and essays (I've got so much going on with IB and applications because I've applied to the US and the UK).

I'm applying to Stanford, MIT, Berkeley and probably one other. I'm also an international (English is first language).

My breakdown is 720, 720 (CR and W) and 750 (M). I'm glad that I've broken 700 in all sections, but the maths curve both times I took it was really harsh. I've gotten -2 twice and it's given me 740 and 750. I feel like I can improve math and writing, but CR is unlikely to improve in the little time I have (because I have so many other commitments).

Is this score likely to put me at any disadvantage - I see people with 2300+ getting rejected and I wonder whether a lower score will only further justify a rejection.

I'm leaning towards a retake... What are your thoughts?

If you think you can get a 2300 this next time while still having the time to maintain As in your classes and doing college apps, then go for it. It depends on if you can manage the time well enough and how much you think your score can improve by (if it’s only 30-40, it’s almost a waste of time). A 2190 is below average for those top tier schools so it will definitely help if you get a better score though.

My personal experience would say yes. I took the SAT in May and got a 2180. Then I decided to take it again in October with literally no prep and my score jumped to 2300. It’s all about the mindset.

I agree with Orange Duck. My score went from 2190 to 2300+ when I took it again this October.
Take it if you really think that you can improve. You jumped up 190 pts the first time, so hopefully you’ll be able to jump up some more this time!
