My current score is a 2260.. But it's a weird breakdown. 660 CR 800 Math 800 Writing. I'm going to be applying to some top schools this fall and I'm wondering if you guys think it's in my best interest to take the test for a third time with the hope of raising my critical reading score. The first time I took it I got 610, the second time 660, and both of those were with minimal prep. Is it worth it to really study and re-take in October?

I would look at the middle-50 for the critical reading section of the schools that you plan to apply to and see how you currently stack up. Ultimately, I think you could raise your critical reading score with a bit of prep and it would be worth a shot if the schools that you plan to apply to superscore the SAT. I have a 2260 as well (1500 two part) and don’t consider it too shabby hehe.

Thanks yeah I’m strongly considering re-taking it. If my breakdown was similar to yours I wouldn’t need to re-take! 1500 would be nice

Your breakdown is fine! But if the schools that you plan to apply to superscore in the way that they only use the highest scores from each section as a factor in admissions (regardless of date taken) then it can only help you to retake.

I don’t like to feed the insanity, but I admit that I would definitely go take this one more time. You say you have done minimal prep and yet your score has already improved nicely. Do 5 practice tests from the blue book over the summer, review your mistakes thoroughly and then go take one more shot. I occasionally work with students with your current breakdown. They clearly have the analytic skills and the language skills. Some serious practice is all they need. So if it won’t ruin your summer, do it.

I would suggest you don’t retake. Your breakdown is fine, and there is no need to spend more time practicing for the SAT when you can be doing more productive activities. Remember that the SAT score opens doors to college acceptances, and it is really up to your personality, EC’s, and voice in your essays that will be the deciding factor.

I’d say retake but if your scores drop really bas on the other 2 sections that would be a negative rather than a positive. I got 2280 my self cr 700 .

It looks like you’ve mastered what it takes to get an 800 on Math and Writing - an 800 in math again is certainly very doable; however, an 800 in writing again can be a bit iffy since the College Board is notorious for putting trick questions.

That being said, if you are aiming for Ivy-level schools, a retake would be advised. I personally had a similar breakdown on the PSAT last year (62-80-80) with a 62 in CR (the dreaded CR…) and was able to improve it up to a 720-800-800 SAT by June with minimal practice. Try to master the SAT vocab through books like Direct Hits and just go through some untimed CR passages to master the accuracy part of Critical Reading. Obviously aim for an 800 but you’re about 4 questions from scoring in the 700s, which should put you comfortably within the 25-75% range for most top-level schools. Just practice and I’m sure you’ll be able to get there! And while members of this forum have given mixed responses, it’s ultimately your decision.

Congrats on the great score and good luck with your decision! :)
