I got my November scores back, and I was especially disappointed with my math score. It's in the 96th percentile, and my CR score is in the 97th. I know if I took it again I could do better in math without so many stupid mistakes. I got 730 CR, 730 Math, and 770 Writing. However, I've taken the SAT three times now. I went from a 2040 to 2090 to 2230 with minimal prep. Should I retake for a fourth time, or does that look obsessive? I was planning on retaking Math II in January. Should I do standby December SAT I testing, or just focus on my SAT II's? Now I'm afraid I shouldn't even bother applying to top schools with these scores.

I think you should definitely retake a 2230. That was my first SAT score, and I retook it without any additional studying for a 2310; and with that math score, there’s definitely room for improvement since at this point you just have to avoid stupid mistakes.

You should retake it again. If you thin kyou can do better, then go for it. You can always use score choice to make your lower scores not seen by colleges.

I think you need to stop looking at your SAT score and make sure the other parts of your application are suffice. Colleges want to look at you as a whole - a 2230 is a great score. It also might impact you mentally if you retake it and don’t improve. This could just lead to excess stress, which won’t yield the best results.

A 2230 is elite and if anyone I know in real life mentioned that score they would garner envy from others. Retake if you can think you can do better, do not retake just to see.

Is it funny how I got the same scores as you? What was your writing? Mine was 70 MC and 12 Essay

Thank you all for your responses. I’ve thought this over, and I’m going to do standby testing on Saturday. I better start a practice test now!

TheHelper- I got 75 MC and a 10 Essay. I got a 12 essay on my first SAT, and it’s been bugging me that I haven’t been able to get a 12 essay since then. Are you retaking?

What schools are you shooting for? And, what was your Math II score?

dignified1- I’m going to apply to Brown, Vanderbilt, and possibly a HYP, though I have serious doubts about this. I have local state universities as safeties, though. I got a 750 on Math II.

wannadomath- Thank you very much! That’ll really help. I was wondering what I could do besides Blue Book.

Yeah. I’m going to retake in March because I have two big national debate tournaments on the December and January testing dates. I want to get an 800 on Math, which will bring me up to the 2300 range. Good luck!

Are you out of your mind? 2230 is a very good score! I vote no re-take but you can do as you please. I would like you to know though that I would kill for a score like that.

i vote retake if and only if you are confident that you will score 2300+

+3 tends to look obsessive, but that’s only significant if the schools to which you are applying don’t accept score choice (Yale, for instance). Check it out and see which ones do and which don’t. Good luck!

Why retake a 2230?
will colleges say, oh my god, he has a 2300, I better accept him because 2230> ( so much better than) 2300
or will colleges say, nice, 2300, but what about the other aspects of his application / But, hey, if you’ve finished all your essays, why not?

2400≫2230… but in all honesty, you’re in the 99th percentile of SAT takers, and I say you’re fine.

Well, I’m a freshman but… personally, I took the SAT a second time and just got a 2230. I’m retaking, however, because I got a 660 in CR which is more important to colleges than a 790 writing (nah I’m a senior :P).

Retaking a 99%+ percentile is quite useless in my opinion. If someone gets rejected because of a 2230, I think it’s probably because that’s the only thing they have.
