Retake ACT?

Hello everyone!

I was just wondering if I should retake the ACT because of a [relatively] low reading/English+Essay score..

I'm relatively new to the ACT and am aware that this sounds like just another attempt at bragging about my score [read: troll], but I really am wondering as to what effect this could have on my future admissions prospects.

So without further ado, my scores:

Cumulative: 36
English: 36
Math: 36
Science: 36
Reading: 34
Essay: 9
English + Essay: 33

thank you so much for any information!

nope don’t retake. Your reading and english+essay scores are absolutely fine. congratz on the 36

thank you so much!

is that the general consensus?

bump bump bump

That is ridiculous. That’s like getting a Ferrari for your 16th birthday and thinking about returning it because the left brake light is a little dim. Be proud of your 36. Besides, from what I’ve heard, only the very best writers get 11s or 12s in Writing. I was quite surprised that I managed a 10.

I have to agree with emberjed. When you reach the 34-36 range, so much of your score can depend on the randomness of that day’s test since it comes down to a matter of single questions. When you already have a 36, I think chances are much higher that your score will go down (unless you are consistently getting 36s across the board on practice tests and 12s on writing). The writing in particular can depend so much on the given question – I got a 10 on February and April, then suddenly a 12 on June due entirely to the subject of the question which is not something you can really prep for. I would be SHOCKED if any college that saw a 36 would let one 34 and a 9 on the essay diminish a perfect ACT score (which less than 1,000 students a year receive). I say be proud that you got that 36 in the first place, and don’t let a 34 in one subject and a 9 on your essay rain on your parade, so to speak.

Don’t retake it. If you do, and you get a lower cumulative score, that would look really bad.

thank you so so so much everyone!

I really appreciate it, and wish you all the best of luck in your future endeavors!

You got a perfect score!! You shouldn’t have to worry because not a lot of people can get the kind of scores you have!

thank you trinniee!
