Hey guys,
I just got my AP scores back today and saw that I got a 4 in chemistry and and a 4 in AP Computer Science A. The thing is I took a class for comp. sci and still got a 4... but i self-studied AP Chem. My question is whether colleges scrutinize over AP scores during the admission process. Will it appear bad to the top schools (not necessarily ivies) if they see that I have taken a class and still gotten 4's? Should I retake? Or should I worry on other things? Like does it make a big deal in the admission's process if I got a 4 over a 5 when taking the class?

Thanks.

No not really. You don’t even have to report them. A 4 is still good so worry about other things

but won’t colleges see that I took the course for comp sci on my transcript? don’t i have to report that? I guess i don’t have to show chem

Yes but there’s only about seven places for both ap and sat lls do you can boast about other scores instead

oh really ok thanks so collectively out of all my ap and sat ii scores i can really only report 7 of them? any more replies?

you can report more than 7

On the common app? No you can’t. At the most it might be 8

You’re worried because you got a 4? Seriously?

A 4 is still a very good score. I don’t know why you’re stressing about this, you should be proud. Just because it’s not “perfect” doesn’t mean it’s not a great score and worthy of a top school (yes, many of them accept 4s for credit).

Honestly, CC tries my patience sometimes…

^agreed!
Go to college board and look at ap credit policy at diff schools. Fours are often accepted.

CC tries my patience too but I can understand the worry of having a 4 when everyone on here being chanced often boasts their string of 5s

hey guys, I understand how you guys can think that paranoid with the 4 but im not trying to say in anyway that 4’s are not good.I am content; however as Avalde4 said, most people on the “chance me thread” or the “official ___ class of 2016” tend to have an exceedingly large percentage of 5’s (if not all 5’s). From what it seems, AP’s may play a role in admissions. some say otherwise Just curious about everyone else’s two cents and/or experiences are with AP scores and admissions. Any more thoughts?

Thanks.

^I just wouldnt put the 5s on your application, then (if you’re worried).

Correlation is not causation. Students with 5’s on AP exams may be accepted more becuase they are better students. Just because a lot of people getting 5’s get accepted does not mean that getting the 5’s causes this. The people being accepted are strong students and thus they do well on AP exams. AP exams are also self-reported so they could be looked at to compare to your grades in the AP classes you take at school, but are not a deciding factor because you tell them what you got, as opposed to SAT Subject Test scores which are reported by the Collegeboard.

You should not worry about you two 4’s. They are good scores and will not be the reason you get accepted or rejected from a school.

Test scores are just one part of an application. Many “perfect” candidates get rejected because of all of the other “perfect” students applying. I’m applying to good schools and I have a 2, two 3s, a 4 and a 5. I have the advantage of being Hispanic, going to the international science fair and living in the poorest county in the US. I’m also ranked 3, but my point is that test scores themselves don’t define whether you will or will not get into a good college.

hey guys, thanks for all the input. I think I realize now not to stress over 2 4’s. I think im just going to focus on other aspects to better myself overall. I doubt I want to waste a chunk of my time simply to retake 2 AP’s. This is a good learning experience that shows me i won’t always get the ideal score. I really appreciate the input and I think I’ll work on other things.

Thanks.

@your most recent post: Good on you. It’s not the end of the world if you get a 4 - and I assure you that getting 4’s won’t do much, if any, damage to your admission chances. It certainly isn’t a big deal! :)

Most colleges, even the most competitive ones, don’t take your AP scores into consideration when they look at you as an applicant.
For example: UC Berkeley, undoubtedly one of the more competitive schools in the nation, says this regarding their AP score policy:

“Although the College Board reports all AP tests results to us, students should be aware AP test scores lower than 3 will not adversely affect their chances for admission.”
[University of California - AP credits](http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/counselors/ap-credits/index.html)

Also, a 4 isn’t too bad because alot of schools (including Berkeley and all the UCs) accept 4s for credits.
Essentially, AP scores aren’t used on an admissions basis; rather, as a gauge to see if you are qualified to skip those classes in college.

Return the favor and chance me please!

You’re good with fours. Most Ivies will accept 4’s in at least some subjects.

Check the AP credit listings at each of the colleges you are interested in to see if a 4 versus a 5 makes any difference in what type of credit or placement you will get in college.
