Retake SAT, ACT, or neither.

I got 2210 on SAT in Jan. 34 on ACT in March. Which should I retake and when? I have 2 subject tests so far and was gonna take more in June but should I retake SAT instead?

Bump. I plan on applying ED to Duke or Penn. Should I retake or are these scores good enough?

Here is your chart. You seem to have a 2260 in ACT translation.

34 1510-1550 2260
33 1460-1500 2190
32 1410-1450 2130

Duke’s profile - read what they are looking for and dont concentrate on only the numbers. You will realize the SAT/ACT scores are just one piece of decisionmaking.

Here is your UPenn’s profile.

Ok, so my ACT is right at the 75th perc. at both schools. I realize that numbers are only important past a certain threshold but should I retake? I also have 800 USH and 720 Math level 2 on the subject tests and I plan on taking more. Could a 35 or 36 really increase my chances all that much?

How much time and money are you willing to spend for a point or 2 point increase in your ACT (your better score)? Take many things into consideration, but I wouldn’t waste time studying for standardized tests when you could be spending it on APs, work, and relaxing IMO; unless of course there’s some sort of scholarship you’re working for, which by all means, $50 on another test pales in comparison to a $10,000+ scholarship.

34 would place you well in any college admissions office, anywho.

What do you want to study once you get in? If you want engineering, I would say retake Math II instead of SAT or ACT. However, if you figured out that now you can score 2350 on SAT and 2210 does nt reflect your true number, by all means retake it.

I plan on retaking Math 2 in June along with Chemistry and Latin. I do not plan on studying engineering, but I don’t feel like 720 accurately reflects my Math ability. I am taking the AP Calculus AB exam this year. Will a 5 on that make up for low Math 2?

Earning a 5 on that AB exam might help to mitigate your low math score. However, I strongly urge to retake both exams because you are aiming for such competitive schools. Both of your scores can be improved greatly with a bit more studying. Never mind the 8 hours that you are wasting in the classroom by taking those tests. College admissions is most important at this point in your life, and you must dedicate yourself fully to it.

Ok thank you for the advice

What are the details or your SAT and ACT scores?
If you are only going to take on, I would suggest the SAT. There is more of a range for improvement. Unless you are a minority, Penn is a lottery. You could have strong scores and still only have a 5-6% chance to get accepted.

I would not re-take either test. A 34 is good enough for any school that you apply to. Think what you can do with the time that you would otherwise spend trying to get the 36 or the 800. I think Ad Comms would prefer to see you do something more productive with your time.

A Stanford Ad comm said, “college entrance exams are not intended to be an extracurricular activity!”

A 5 on the Calc BC exam would carry a lot of weight. Remember the math on the SAT is pretty basic. A 720 is a good score and shows you are prepared even for engineering. It is only 2-3 questions that separate a 720 from an 800. A 5 on Calc BC shows your are well prepared too.
