RETAKE SAT1? need help deciding!

SAT score (JUNIOR year, october)

710-CR
730-M
790-W
(10 on essay)

total: 2230

I was aiming for 2200+ because i heard that was all you really needed for competitive schools. but i thought my MATH would be way higher because that's my strongest subject! i had NO idea my writing score would be that high
(i took it sophomore year and got 580-W, 590-CR, 710-M)

Should i retake it?? because i only have 1440/1600 and i heard writing is not that important so its pretty much pointless i got such a high score on it)
Should i study for the SAT again and get a higher math score? because i think it's pretty easy, just extremely tricky and i have a tendency to make stupid/careless mistakes. but i might risk my CR and W going down because i was really happy to get 700+ on CR!

I'm asian though so it looks pretty bad to get a low math score right? but i am from Arkansas. haha

And I plan on applying to really competitive colleges like Yale, Stanford, UPenn, Columbia..etc
(But I'm only a junior so i have ALOT of time to prepare if necessary. I was thinking i could do some more practice over the summer because i didn't study at all for math and i could definitely work more on CR. )

Writing is important; it's a myth that it isn't.

Your score's great: a 2230 is in the top 1% of the population, and all your scores are 700+. I think your scores are good enough for any school; SAT's are just sort of quick little benchmarks, but they're not overly important past a certain point.

Ok, because alot of people on this website claim most colleges don't think it's very important and some colleges don't even look at it.

I know I'm pretty happy with my score but very disappointed with math. I know I could've done much better if I didn't make careless mistakes.

Would they be more lenient since I took it as a junior?

I agree with Arachnotron....plus, you don't want to risk a bad test or just a bad test day. You did a great job, just keep it.

You also have to realize how hard it is to do better than 730 in Math...How many questions did you miss, like 3? It's tough, but if you were getting 800s left and right it can't hurt to take ove.r

i think that since you're only a junior now, you still have time to retake it again, but it depends on whether or not you're happy with your score
retaking isn't that bad, i just took the SAT for the last time in oct and i scored about 170 points higher than the first time i took it

I'm happy with my overall score. I just wish I would've gotten 790 on M and 730 on W.

I felt really good about the CR section this time, so I don't want to risk getting an extrememly difficult one next time. But i missed 4 sentence completion. So more vocab and some more practice COULd raise my CR score too. But my W score will probably go down. I only missed 1 MC...which was a miracle! I always miss 4-5 on practice tests.

Yeah, I missed 3!! Two were geometry (weakest math subject) and one was an easy question (probably really stupid mistake). I think it's hard too..but so many people on this website has gotten such good scores!!

Would colleges be more lenient if you took it as a junior?
Since most people submit scores from senior year?

well it depends where ur applying. if you're applying somehwere that superscores, you're good to take it again....twice, regardless of what scores you get (as long as their not horrid), is a totally acceptable amount of times to take the SAT.

Haha, that's really crazy....i'm the furthest thing from a math wiz and i just could not break the 670 barrier or even into the 700s because of how ridiculous it gets in that range.

My final advice to you, after MUCH thought, is to not retake. I think now with the ridiculous amount of academically qualified applicants out there, good SAT scores become a given. Meaning, you cross the 2100 barrier and you're being considered. But in your case, they're not going to take you because you get a 2300 instead of a 2210. It's up to your EC's, courseload, recs, and essay to get you in once you pass their "SAT test".

And one last thing - everyone on this website is crazy. Don't pay attention to their scores...abnormal.

It'll be my third time (took it once sophomore year).

Haha i hope so because they have amazingly high scores.

Statistically speaking, 1% of the population has a 2200+, so CC is definitely not the norm.

THank goodness. People here have really high scores. And great ECs/GPA as well..

But it's always good to know the competition at these schools!
Would getting a higher M/CR score help me alot? I wouldn't get rejected JUST because of my lower SAT score would I? Because if so, I'll definitely take it again.

Smile614, you are a junior so there is no risk if you do worse when you retake. I took the SAT I in october and i got a 750cr, 780m, and 800w, and I'm retaking only because the only thing I will lose is one saturday if I do worse(because of the new score policy for class of 2010). I would say retake because although I don't see much changing if you surpass 2230, there is absolutely no harm.

WOW random747, great scores!!
If only my math score was higher..

Good point. I'll have to prepare a bit though if I want to do better...
I don't mind losing a Saturday morning for a higher score.

WHen do you plan on taking it again?

I just hope my lower SAT scores wont be the reason I get rejected from top competitive schools.

Another question--I've read on some posts here that there isn't really much of a difference as long as you get 2200+. (unless you get a 2400).

Is that true?

Would getting 2300+ still help me stand out more?
