Retakes

i'm a senior, i've taken the SAT 5 times. twice in 2004, 3 times in 2006. My highest total was in one sitting and at 1960.

I want to retake in january, and really think thati can improve this score. How will colleges see it when i send my scores and they see that i've taken the SAT a total of 6 times if i do this?

Is it worth my time to retake, and have taken the SAT 6 times, or just keep my 1960.

applying to MIT,UNC,DUKE,UPENN,Columbia, NCSTATE

i was just deferred from columbia ED because of my SAT I test scores (according to most people on this board). I had 2050. I would retake or maybe throw your apps in at some different schools. Then again, if you are an under-represented minority, 1960 may be good enough. Good luck.

bump.... anyone else?

Why do you think January would be any different than the other 5 tests you have taken?

It's only worth taking if you hadn't prepped for the previous tests or were distracted/sick. If you can prep differently or more effficiently than you did for the other tests and see visible improvement with practice tests, it might be worth a shot. But it seems to me that even if you didn't prep, by the 5th time you'd have taken 4 real SATs for practice anyway, so I don't think it would make much of a difference...

Taking it 6 times is an awful lot if your score is hovering within the same range...

perhaps this will help.

shulz: i feel like my scores have been inconsistent. the last SAT i took was my highest and had just found out of the death of a family member days before, which kind of set me off, but somehow i did the best. Also i went up 100 points in my writing with zero practice

so any one else know if taking 6 times is ok? i've taken it 5 times already

go for it.

they wont even consider your old scores. from 2004

If you prep writing you should be able to raise it to an easy 700+, same with CR. Math is just focus.

get Kaplan and Barrons writing workbook, and memorize some 2000+ vocab words and you should be able to easily get 2100.

If you decide to take it, you might want to explain the circumstances in your application, under the optional section that asks for additional info you couldn't fit anywhere else in the application...

I suggest you start prepping NOW! It's a month and a half away, but if you want to see changes, you'll have to start immediately. I mean, your CR has been within the same 100 point range, math within a 60 point range and writing within a 100 point range across all tests - not a lot of variation. Make sure you can surpass these ranges and really make a retake worth it.

Are you sure that those schools still accept the January SAT? I'm not sure about the ones you listed, but most competitive schools request scores be sent by the first few weeks of January.

schulz: yea i still need to check with the colleges about if the my new scores will be considered.

thanks for the info.
