Retaking a Class After Getting a B

Is retaking Chemistry over the summer after getting a B+ first semester and a B second semester worth it? If I did that I would be able to get a 3.9 (unweighted) gpa when applying for colleges.

A couple of Bs aren’t going to hurt your chances, even at tippy top colleges. Take something else instead. I can see retaking for a D, maybe even a C in certain circumstances, but retaking for a B+ might make them wonder if you’re grade grubbing.

If you feel a need to prove your proficiency in chemistry, take the SAT subject test and do very well on that.

Retaking a grade higher than D+ looks like grade grubbing.

Not a good use of your time.

please clarify - are you talking about re-taking the class in college after taking Chemistry in HS? Or are you talking about re-taking it in HS? First one might make sense, second one makes no sense.

a couple of Bs are not a problem. If you want to be a Chem major this might not look so great, but otherwise just put it behind you and move on.

With some fairly basic assumptions, this means that without an additional A for a lab-based science class, you would have a 3.894 instead of a 3.900.

Are you asking if it’s worth retaking a course more than a year after you first took it to increase your GPA by 0.006?

No, don’t retake it.
What year are you taking CHem? Sophomore? You can always take AP Chem as a Senior.

Something to keep in mind:
Do not think 'Every point I get off of a homework or test is a point away from going to Harvard."
Think: “I need to do my best, and there will be a college that is right for me when I graduate.”

Do not think “If I don’t go to an Ivy League School/Top20, I am doomed forever.”
Think: “No matter where I go, I can bloom where I am planted. I can get involved and shine.”

Do not think: “My life is over…the kid in my math class is taking 20 APs and I am taking 5. I will never succeed.”
Think: “I need to challenge myself, but only to the point where I can still do well.”

Pick a college that fits you, don’t remake yourself to fit a college.

Simply no
