Retaking a course and transfering

I am a sophomore in college at my state school and I am in the process of making my list of schools to transfer to.

Currently my grades have been as such:

Expository writing: A (highest grade in the class. I was the standout student. My teacher told me many times how impressed he was with me, and often mentioned me to many other professors)

200 level Anthropology course: A (also the highest grade in the class, as well as the standout student. My papers received A+s)

Intro to macro: A

Advanced French 300 level: B+/A-

Calculus: (I failed calculus because I did not do the homework. I really regret this, because I found it very simple. I could have easily gotten a high A if I put in more effort. I will be retaking in the summer. I will also take Calc 2.

Intro to micro: (This was an online course I took last semester). I had a 96 and then when I found out online courses are not transferrable to any college I wanted to transfer to, I did not complete it. I would have dropped it however it was past the drop date. To make up for that I am taking the regular in class version this semester)

Now this semester I am taking:

Intro to micro (as i just stated)

200 level poly sci course

Philosophy course

150 level world civ class (to fulfill the history gen ed requirement. However, should I perhaps switch to a higher level?)

Over the summer I will take:

Calculus 1 (retaking it)

Intermediate micro

Intermediate macro

Financial accounting

A stats course

Calculus 2

Before this school, I was at a tier 1 school in the honors program with a 10K scholarship and a huge leadership position at my school as well as nationally for my extra curricular. However, I left the school because my mother was deathly ill and I felt I needed to go home. Therefore i went to that tier 1 private school for only one semester.

Right now I am a non matriculated student at my state school. I am taking classes for credit but not a degree at my school.

I am in regular day division classes, so I am a normal student taking the normal classes, I just am not planning on getting my degree here.

I am not looking to leave this school for "lack of prestige". I believe it is not where you go to school, but rather what you do with your education that makes the person successful. I want to transfer, because of the lack of course offerings. My major is econ and the only courses offered at my current school are intro to micro and macro, intermediate micro and macro, and an economic seminar. Thats it.

Penn is somewhere I would really like to be, because of what it offers for its econ department in the CAS. However I would really like to be at wharton studying finance because that is right up my alley, however I am not sure I could get in.

Any suggestions?

Would an interview help? My essays and recs are superb. My ECs also set me apart. I had top leadership positions in high school as well and was published in the local paper in high school.

Also i am a urm. (Black)

I am just worried about the retaking of those two courses. On Penn's website it says the applicant's record needs to be free of any failing or incomplete marks.

However, since I am retaking them, and I have a valid reason for retaking that econ class (since it was online). Would they understand?

Definitely call the admissions office for transfers and they’ll be able to help you out. It would be better to find out for sure if you’re eligible for applying before going through all of that work to apply. Just explain to them everything you wrote here and it should be fine.
