Retaking Bio 1B for Public Health Major

To declare for the Public Health major, one must get a B- minimum. I got a C+. Does it mean that my chances of applying are over? Am I only able to retake Bio 1B if I got worse than a C-?

I think you should email the adviser - sphug@berkeley.edu

yeah you can still retake it-its just that the C+ will still factor into your new GPA along with the improved grade. Whereas if you had actually gotten below a C- the first time and retook it for a higher grade, only the higher grade would have factored in.

that being said make sure you try to get a signigficantly higher grade the second time around because Tony is really starting to tighten the belt on who he lets in for PH.

oh and key point, you dont have to redo the labs if you scored above 70% i believe-just go to Mike Moser

Wow, I had no idea that you could do that. My final (curved) lab score was 82%. I will talk to Mike Moser. So does that mean that I will just have to do excellent on my midterms and final now?

When you say that the C+ will factor in my new GPA, do you mean it will just be counted additionally to my GPA, or it will be factored in my new Bio 1B letter grade? Say, for example I get a B+ after retaking the class?

Tony is doing a new thing this year by making an application process for people to declare this Spring 2011. Does anyone know if we can declare next Fall too, or is it only Spring deadlines? Since I can’t retake Bio 1B this Spring 2011, I’ll have to enroll for either Summer 2011 or Fall 2011.

yup both the C+ and the new grade (B+ or whatever) you get will factor in your cum gpa-but the major would use your higher grade in the major application.

i think you have to submit it by june 1. you should talk to tony first and see what he says before you sign up for summer school or anything though.

gl :)

Thank you so much!!

I am not a student at UC Berkeley and maybe policies there are different but I have never heard of a college or university that will allow you to retake a class that you received a passing grade in (C or better).
