Retaking class?

I'm an incoming freshman, and I registered for classes yesterday. (yay!)
I brought in ~20 college in the high school credits, one of which was equivalent to Math 124. Technically, I got a 4.0 in the class, but I don't feel prepared in order to be successful in Math 125 (teacher was easy) and I am going to retake the class this fall.

Because I am retaking the class, will my transfer GPA have any effect on my final Math 124 gpa for fall quarter? I know that happens if you take a class twice at the UW, but I'm not sure if the principle is the same for my situation.

I don’t have the answer to your intended question on whether taking a class twice will affect your final gpa. But, I would like to advise you against retaking. Getting a 4.0 for Math 124 proves that you have grasped the basics of the subject (no matter how easy it was), you are already prepared for the next stage. If you are worried, try reviewing your past works before attending 125. I personally think it would be a waste of time and credit allocation, you could have taken some other classes that quarter to fulfill graduation requirements. And, who knows, maybe everything is gonna be the exact same as what was covered during your high school, even the difficulty level for its final exam.
Below, I have provided some links on the syllabus and past quizzes (you can browse through the topics and see which areas you are weak in and work on them. also, there are sample past quizzes which you can attempt to find out where you would stand.):

Hope anything helps. FYI, i’m also a freshman with transfer credits, got 124 and 125 transferred. So in my first quarter, i’m gonna jump to 126! I share the same worries about not being able to keep up.

I would highly advise against retaking a class you got a 4.0 in, for too many reasons to explain

I definitely get what you guys are saying. My only issue is, I honestly only know half of what is being talked about in those final exams. But I suppose I do have 2 months to prepare. I think I’ll go for it with 125. I just hope my GPA doesn’t suffer. That won’t bode well for engineering.

Mathematics’ all about practicing! All the best, I’m sure you can do well!

Referring to OP’s post, I believe that as long as you meet the minimum grade required for getting transfer college credits from a high school class you took, UW will give you the equivalent credits but that’s it.

In other words, if you had completed a course in high school with a grade that is equivalent to completing Math 124 in UW, you’ll be given 5 credits, since that is a 5 credit class in UW. However, you will not actually receive a grade regardless of whether you barely met or completely destroyed the minimum grade requirement for the credit transfer.

There are some pros and cons to this arrangement. Pros? You can take less classes at UW. Cons? These transfer credits do not actually count towards your “credits taken at UW” requirement for major application, graduation, etc. Also, since these credits have no grades attached, if you do bad in your future UW courses, I believe the calculations will actually work against your favors and pull you down greater than the default degree. Be careful!

I also am curious about whether I should take Math 124. I took AP Calc AB junior year and got a 4.0 to place me into Math 125 but when I was looking at my old AP review book the other day I couldn’t answer most of the questions since it’s been over a year. So I should probably retake it? Or should I review as much as I can and just take 125?

I meant a 4 lol not 4.0

Well, if you had received a 4 in your AP Calc AB, then you should be awarded the 5 UW credits that is equivalent of completing Math 124. In other words, you dont have to take Math 124 and if you do, you only run the risk of doing badly and dragging your GPA down.

I think the best case is just to quickly re-familiarize yourself with the topics before Math 125 starts, and hopefully you do well enough that you no longer have to deal with these math courses after this. Becareful though, most students who leave maths completely unpracticed for over a year will find all of these UW math courses very difficult unless there is much practice before class start… depending on the professor you get, you will very likely get midterm exams in Week 3, 6 and then finals in Week 10 or 11 with regular homework assignments throughout the quarter. UW runs a packed schedule, your breather room will be little to none. Best to get yourself a head start.
