Retaking or Not Reporting SAT II Subj. Test

does it make sense? My S got a subpar 580 on Math Level II, but a strong 710 on Literature. I saw something about score choice. Can he just submit the Literature Score to colleges and not report the Math Level II results taken on the same test day, or does he have to omit reporting all tests taken the same day? Can he re-take Math Level II and if he gets a better score next time just report that Math II score and the the Literature score from an earlier test date? Will the colleges know that he has chosen not to report and earlier Math Level II score? Feeling this is really going to hurt his chances w/any elite school if he has to report that 580 Math II score---what are the best options others have pursued in this situation, TIA.

more info: His SAT score was 2030 w/ M640 V670 W720. So math is obviously a challenge for him and his weakest link. I would expect on a re-test of Math Level II he might be able to get it up to 640-650 but not much higher. Still, printing a 6 rather than a 5 for the first digit of the score could be really key.

He can use score choice for most schools and not report the bad score. Some schools require all tests be sent to them. Check the school’s web site.

From the college’s point of view, some colleges allow score choice and some (mostly just really elite ones) require that all scores be sent.

But as far as college board’s rules, you cand choose which subjects to send scores for, whether they were taken on the same date or not, but for any particular subject, you have to send all if you send any. So in your scenario, you can send just Lit and not Math II. And you can retake Math II later, but if you do take it more than once, you have to send both results or neither. So if you retake it and get a 720 or something you can send it in, but you’ll have to send the earlier Math II score as well.

^ I’m going to disagree. My son took chem & math 2 on a single date. He retested math 2 on a later date and got a better score. He sent the chem and second math 2 only. No problems with collegeboard. All his schools were score choice.

If he’d applied to a ‘show us everything school’ we obviously would have sent the first math 2 as well. I don’t think those ‘hurt’. IMO they are looking for professional test takers, not two times. In that situation all applicants are sending all scores so everyone is in the same boat and bound to have one or two lower scores they retested to improve.

I agree with Blueiguana: Schools won’t care if your student took a test twice, they will if he took the same test 4 or 5 times.

I will just offer the thought that if math is not his thing, why retake Math II? Unless you are applying to a rare school that requires/strongly recommmends three SAT subject tests, he only needs to submit two. That Lit score is great! Why not take a subject test in another, stronger area? If a particular school requires a math subject test, maybe Math I will suffice?

Look at the percentile ranks for Math II–they are brutal. It’s a fairly self-selecting group of kids, and the curve is generous.

Great point TXArtemis! I’m so sorry I didn’t think of this. I was just focused on it not being a problem to retest or report the first score. If math is not his native language and he doesn’t need it (ie required by a specific e’school) pick a subject he excels in. Has he taken any AP classes? They can often be good prep for a corresponding subject test.

blueiguana - When I looked at score choice, it let me pick specific dates but it did nt show a choice for individual subjects on the same day. So there is a flag you can check for a subject at a time?

Gosh, it’s been since last November when the scores were sent. I know that we were able to select the chem from a May test date, and the math 2 from the November test date WITHOUT sending the math 2 from the May date.

I just went in and attempted to send scores so I saw how I did it. I selected the school, selected that I wanted to select the scores (it will only let you do this if the school uses score choice), there are then boxes next to all the subject tests taken that you can check or uncheck. This is all done if you are sending all scores AFTER the fact, not using any of the free reports.
