Retaking the SAT I... JUST for the Writing section. Should I? HELP

Well I did well in CR and M, but my W was a 740. I made some REALLY stupid mistakes and scored a 12 on my essay. I KNOW I can get at least a 780 in W in the next session, because 1) I'll definitely not make those mistakes again and 2) My W scores from official practice tests were pretty consistent and 3) I don't think my essay score will change since I've been complimented as a good writer and I had around 5 minutes to spare upon writing all 2 pages on the last SAT essay.

Now, if this were an area in which I am doubtful, then I'd be PERFECTLY HAPPY with a 740. However, I just can't stand the feeling that I should've done better; I definitely could and will do better.

Should I retake it just for W's sake? Not revealing too much, this will bump me up from a 2290 to above the 2300s mark.

don't retake. that's a fine score, and a lot of schools don't care about writing that much. if it were one of ther other sections it might be worth it, but not for writing.

Colleges don't care about writing?... Okay....

more opinions?

well, actually, a lot of schools dont really look at writing yet. but for the class of 2008, writing will likely become more important. if you think that you can improve the writing and also keep your cr and math scores up, i say go for it.

"Colleges don't care about writing?... Okay....
more opinions?"

The author's tone indicates that...

A) He agrees with the response
B) He just ate a cantaloupe
C) He doesn't want to go to college
D) He is ambivalent
E) He disagrees with the response

You really seem to want to take it again and are just looking for peer confirmation. If that is the case, go for the gusto and get that 2300. The higher your score, the better you look to colleges and if you're willing to retest, have at it. It's probably true that writing doesn't carry as much weight as the other two subjects but you seem to be doing very well in it so I would recommend following your gut instinct and taking it again.

Problem is, the new SAT is at such a stage that we don't know exactly how colleges consider the writing section. A few years ago, some schools claimed to disregard it altogether, but now that it has some kind of track record, that position may have shifted. Therefore, it may be beneficial to boost your writing score.

Don't get me wrong, a 2290 is excellent by any standard, but if you want to retake for the sake of your own peace of mind, go for it.
Also, there's the added bonus that you might score higher on one of the other sections.

The only drawback (besides time and money) is that you'd be retaking an already good score, which is generally frowned upon. But if this is your first SAT, I don't think it will be that big of a deal, seeing as most people take it at least twice anyway.

Look at the national score distributions from class of 2006.

Then look at this thread (especially my posts :) ).

Good luck.

Thanks guys. Honestly, I was looking for confirmation... But now that I think about it, I'm done. Finished and time to work on my ECs.
