Retaking the SAT

I have a 2200: 740 R/760 M/700 W

Should I even bother trying to get my writing score up? I have basically the best possible 2200: everything at least 700 with the weakness in the section that is least important.

Depends on where you’re planning on applying.

@dividerofzero is correct. Your score is excellent for most schools; however, there are some schools where this score would be in a lower percentile. If you plan on applying to these types of schools, and you think you can improve your score, then take the test again. If not, do not retake.

If u feel confident u won’t have a bad day and do worse, then I say GO FOR IT!

DS is in similar situation as u. His GC advises that if he can bump his score a wee bit and get it above 2300, then the pearly gates of scholarship money will open even wider.

How many times have you taken the SAT? If you’ve already taken it 3+ times, do not retake. If you have not then you can retake if you wish, but only if you think you can really improve.

Okay, thanks guys.

I’ve taken it twice (didn’t study for the first…looked up how to do well on the essay the second time). I could probably study a lot and do significantly better, but meeeeeeeh that’s so much effort. The question is if my score will get me rejected from the schools that I’d be in the lower percentiles for or if it’s good enough to pass the threshold. Because if it’s good enough I won’t bother.

It’s all about looking at the candidates holistically. After a certain point, they stop look at SAT scores and look at other factors, such as EC, essays, LOC, and other accomplishments. What schools are you considering applying to? Perhaps we can help you there.

Your score is good enough for any school imo. You’d fall in the middle 50% at most top schools, though closer to the first quartile for writing.

^That is correct, your score is good enough for any school. However, a higher score will make you a stronger candidate for most highly selective schools. If you have the time, do some studying and try to improve. I’d suggest searching the SAT forum for xiggi’s method and silverturtle’s guide.

2200 is good enough any school you apply to but you have to have the other things the schools are looking. SAT scores don’t get you, they are just one requirement. U Chicago turns away plenty of 2400s.

^True, but the 2400s have a higher probability of being accepted than the 2200s
