For those current students on FA who DO NOT receive state grants (just institutional $) - do you need to file your FAFSA tomorrow? Seems to me that Brown’s deadline is much later for returning students.

If there’s no hope for you getting state grants (which, for me means being eligible for Pell Grants… which I’m not) then no, there’s no need to file the FAFSA yet. But be sure to have it in at least a few weeks before the deadline so that if anything’s missing you can take care of that before the deadline. And yeah, basically you can do your FAFSA with your taxes for returning students. Which reminds me of some paperwork I need to finish and send back home.

My son won’t qualify for Pell but he’d like to be eligible for work-study. Do you know if that has this early deadline?

Work-study is not the same as a grant. And it’s not states who dole out the grant. To my knowledge the only reason to apply by February 15th is to be eligible for state grants. Even Federal grants (such as the Pell Grant) shouldn’t be affected by applying later. But for anything Brown awards (such as work study), May 3rd should be the deadline for it to be in the hands of Brown’s FinAid Office.

Oh, and it’s possible that your state is different than mine. For Arizona, the only aid that’s available is either for in-state students or students on the Pell Grant from Arizona.
