I went to college for 3 years before leaving to work for approximately 1 year in another state. In that 1 year, I changed my residency status to the new state (work told me to do so for tax purposes).
My parents were residents of the state my school is in for about 7 years before I started college there. They too have left this state now.
I’m planning on returning to finish my last year of school, will I be able to get classified as a resident to finish up my last 2 semesters? Does anyone know if you start as an in-state student if you get to keep that status until you finish you graduate?
Public unis have their own rules for in-state. Asking here isn’t useful as they vary school by school, even within the same state. Visit the bursar’s office page of the college you’re inquiring about. It should be plainly spelled out.
Thank you guys for your advice! To answer your questions. It’s the University of South Carolina located in Columbia, SC
I’ve googled the terms as you guys suggested and went over the literature. Seems simple, but you definitely taught me something today! The link is located here: http://www.scstatehouse.gov/code/t59c112.php
This is what is written about change of residency:
SECTION 59-112-30. Effect of change of residency.
C. Notwithstanding the other provisions of this section, any dependent person who has been domiciled
with his family in South Carolina for a period of not less than three years immediately prior to his
enrollment may enroll in a state-supported institution of higher learning at the in-state rate and may
continue to be enrolled at such rate even if the parent, spouse or guardian upon whom he is dependent
moves his domicile from this State.
You need to call and ask…because you were not a continuing student at the school. You left, and moved OOS. Please, check to make sure about your status.
