So I took four years of French in high school and one year of in college, which was my freshman year (last year). Due to schedule conflicts as well as a few other reasons, I did not take French this semester, however I am considering taking French again next semester. If I do this I know for a fact that I will have a different instructor then I did last year. My main question is had anybody had the experience of sitting out of a college level foreign language class for a semester (or even a year) and then returning to take more classes with that language. If I take a French class next semester it will have been about 8 months since my last class. I know I haven't forgotten anything, but I'm just worried that since I have not been speaking it on a daily basis, that my French skills may be lacking. I do however feel that continuing with French again would be a useful to my skills when graduating from college.

You’ll probably pick it up again faster than you think you will. I only went up to French III in high school, but when I took Spanish in college (a good five years after my last French class), I had problems because I would always immediately think of how to say everything in French and then would have to translate it into Spanish. I didn’t think I would remember any of my French, but I obviously remembered enough for it to conflict with learning Spanish. You took quite a bit more French than me and you’ll have a much shorter break than I did, so I would expect you’ll pick up speaking the language again quickly, especially if you’re confident that you haven’t forgotten anything.
