I am having a tough time selecting the colleges which I can get in given my stats and ECs, even though I have 1 and a half year left to pass out but the sooner the better. I would appreciate any attempt from you guys to help me make my college list.
Ethnicity : Indian
Citizenship : India
SAT (predicted from PSAT) -1540-1580
SAT subject test - I have not given any subject test but I have practiced many past tests and most probably would get 800 on math and physics.
Aid : I would need it as family income is below 65K
GPA: In my country we get grades but when converted to the US grading system then my GPA would be 4.0.
AP: I was going to give AP this year but was unable to give the covid 19 situation. But would most likely get a 5 in all the 3 exams I applied for
Interest and intended major: physics
Interested colleges: ivy league, MIT, Stanford (they all are my dream colleges), basically any good college where I have a chance.
EC -1.) Author of 3 published books which are available worldwide on platforms like amazon, Barnes & Noble, etc.
2.) Own a blog where I have posted 50+ articles on physics and mysteries of the universe and cosmos and have got 20000+ visitors.
3.) I have been published in many magazines and have won a national creative writing competition
4.) Came in top 100 in the international benchmark test.
5.) Internship in astrophysics
6.) volunteered in my school’s programme where once a week we taught students moral values and I have also educated a group of students in my summer break with basic mathematics skills and the alphabets and sentence formation.
7.) President of my Debate club
8.) organised a ted ED event in my school and gave a ted talk on physics
Please tell me the colleges where I have a chance and if it is worth a chance to apply to top colleges given my EC. And which colleges can be a fit for my profile. I would appreciate any endeavor.
Thanks.
PS: Previously( a month ago) I have asked a chance question but I messed up and missed few details so am asking again.
I don’t want to give false confidence to you, but I think your chances are kind of iffy. You have great ECs which will boost you, but they are greatly varied and not solidified in one subject, which may harm you.
You are assuming about your grades, which is great if you’re confident in your abilities BUT there are things that could go wrong with your testing you can’t account for. Without set in stone test results, it’s hard to predict. TBH, I’m not sure about your AP tests, but the class will still show on your transcript.
@xmasberry thanks for taking out the time and replying. I totally agree with you, surely some things with my grades can go wrong, there’s always a probability. I also sometimes feel that my ECs are very diversified. I even wanted to ask this question but sometimes i think they are mainly divided in two categories: physics (blog, ted ed, internship) and writing (published articles and books) but yeah as you mentioned sometimes i think they are varied. If you could help me on this then it will be great. Once again i appreciate your attempt to answer my query, thanks a lot!
with those publications, if those stats hold true, I would think you have a shot anywhere. But of course those schools are still reaches for anyone so you need to come up with another tier or 2 of choices.
You don’t tell us much about yourself and what you are looking for but other top schools for physics are Johns Hopkins, Univ of Chicago, Harvey Mudd, Carnegie Mellon. Just a notch below might be good targets like Univ of Rochester and Case Western.
RPI or Univ of Illinois might be good safeties for you.
Now that you point it out, I agree that they are divided into two main categories. Seeing as you want to go into physics, I’d say to focus more on the physics portions of your EC.
Also, depending on what you ultimately want to go into, having the writing credentials want hurt you. For college though, have it more streamlined, and put your physics ECs at the top of your activities section.
@joecollege44 Thanks a lot for taking out the time and replying! Yeah i agree that those schools are reaches for anyone and yeah i also think univ of illions could be a good safety, it could even be a target. Once again thanks for replying.
