Hello
I have been offered admission to the ASU Materials Science and Engineering PhD program as well as to the SUNY Albany CNSE Nano Science and Engineering PhD program. Could you please help me choose between the two citing your reasons for your choice?
I have read elsewhere that CNSE is ranked number one for Nano Science and Engineering in the US. Also, people have told me that Nano Materials research at ASU is also very good. I am, therefore, confused to my wits about the choice I should make. Please help.
@karven92 - I doubt that anyone who reads this board will have any relevant information to share. Almost all posts concern undergraduate admissions and life. US News does rank graduate programs, but there is nothing on SUNY Albany at all. ASU’s Material Science program is ranked 33rd in the US. From what I just read, CNSE is transitioning to become SUNY Polytechnic Institute. It could be great, but who knows? They do seem to be attracting a lot of research dollars.
You will have to talk to people in both programs, particularly concerning the professors with whom you will be in contact. You also need to consider the vastly different climates and cultures. Albany is relatively cold and snowy in the winter, while warm and humid in the summer. Tempe (ASU) is gorgeous from October through May, but very hot and dry in the Summer. Tempe is in a metro area of 4.5 million people; Albany’s metro area is 870,000. In my opinion, people in the Southwest are more laid back and easy going than those in the Northeast.
Good luck to you!
