Hello everyone.

I plan on transferring into the Rhetoric program at Cal for Fall '09. Apart from the program's site, there is a very limited amount of information out there about the program.

I understand the basics of the program and have looked into everything on the website, but I'm wondering what it's like first-hand to be in the program. Is it true about the heavy amounts of reading? How are the professors? In your response please specify your emphasis.

ANY feedback would be very very much appreciated. I'm kinda lost here.

i only ever took rhetoric 10, and i LOVED it. we read some really amazing texts and the professor (coffeen) was excellent as well. however, i've been told that rhetoric 10 isn't representative of the entire rhetoric major

Thanks, I appreciate your response.

My best friend is a rhetoric major at Berkeley. He absolutely loved Coffeen's class and decided to take more classes in the major. He said his profs often hold office hours at different coffee shops. I don't go to school with him, but he does seem to have a pretty constant supply of reading and essays. I would imagine the time commitment is very close to that of a standard philosophy major. If you had any specific question I could probably ask him.

Coffeen is no longer teaching Rhetoric 10 in the fall, unfortunately.

blah!

Do s/he teach it in the Spring? or still at all?

i took it from him the spring, so maybe?

but he's not really a full professor, or even a professor. i think his official title is lecturer. he has a job outside teaching at berkeley

yeah he's an Adjunct Professor. I downloaded the entire pod casted semester of Rhetoric 10 by him. I like him already.

And I think he mentioned in the first lecture that he's done teaching. Bummer.

Can anyone recommend any other professors for Rhet 10? Thanks!

Hi everyone,
Bumping this from almost a year ago, haha!

I was admitted to the Rhetoric program just this past week, and am still kind of on the fence about this. Can any Rhetoric students chime in as far as the competitiveness in this major is concerned? I plan on going to law school and would like a feel as to how difficult the maintenance of a high GPA will be. I know that no major at Berkeley is easy, but I also know that competition is stiffer in some majors.

PLEASE – any response would be greatly appreciated!

Bumping this one last time then giving up. This forum kinda sucks.

Maybe cuz the rhetoric majors aren’t here
I would honestly just talk to friends of friends that are currently in the major.
In any case, do come to Cal haha

No, I’m a rhetoric minor. I just don’t want to detail my experiences right now.

Maybe after I submit 70 pages worth of material on May 15th.

Bump! Im interested…

I’m bumping this, because I’m curious as well.

What particularly do you want to know?

Pretty much everything lol How intensive is it? How are the profs? Would it be difficult to get an A compared to other L&S majors? Do you enjoy learning about Rhetoric? I’m torn between this and Philos. etc. Thanks

Bumping again… I’m trying to decide whether or not to enroll, and your input would be very helpful. Thanks!

Ah, I’ll respond on Wednesday after 5pm when, coincidentally, my last rhetoric paper is due by email.
