RHP at USC Chances....

Sorry but I do have one more question. I was reading the Bacc/MD site and it said that if accepted one attends the USC College, meaning that I couldn't major in gerontology. Is this accurate? If I cannot major in gerontology, is it still possible to minor in it?

um, sorry for the confusion mdcissp... I am a mom, not a gerontology major. lol. I meant you were talking about me when you said: "particularly with the aging baby boom population needing more medical care". heh. That is me.

We met the two Gerontologoy profs (husband & wife) at a dinner for parents when we were at Explore w/S in Feb.

And Smart.cookie, I think the gerontology major is in the College. Anyone know if that is correct? I'd hate to give wrong info.

To smart.cookie: It is worth it for you to call USC and explain that you are most interested in preparing and applying to the 6 yr. MD program. Ask if it is possible to minor in Gerontology. I don't know the requirements of the program.

smart.cookie,

If in fact you can't major in gerontology because the Bacc/MD program requires you to be in the College of LAS as an undergraduate, it appears as if you can certainly minor in it as the minor is available to students in the other schools, including Arts & Sciences.

"This minor is a fit for students in business, engineering, communication, cinema-television, or arts and sciences interested in developing a broad knowledge of issues in aging. Based largely on disciplines in the behavioral and social sciences, students learn how aging will impact their lives, families and careers. Upon completion of 20 units and graduation, the minor is noted on the students transcript."

USC Davis School of Gerontology: Academics

I would still check with the University to see if it's possible to apply directly to the School of Gerontology when you apply for RHP and the Bacc/MD program, or transfer into it once you're there, if that is what you'd like to do. Allison DeRaad, the Program Advisor at RHP is extremely nice and helpful, and might be able to answer your questions about this.

Thank you so much FarmDad, I think I will send her an email! You all have been so helpful!

Last question, I promise...
I'm trying to decide on courses next year and I have the option to either dual enroll at a community college and take stats and calc 2 or I can stay at my home school and take IB Math HL. Which would look better on a transcript?

I should mention that the IB Math program would have to be taken through distance learning. That is, it would be like a teleconference type of situation (not sure of all the technical details, I'm not a very techno-savvy person :)

Hey,
wow I just read part of this thread. Coincidentally, I also applied for RHP and bacc/md last year (got into RHP, rejected from bacc/md). So, I didn't go to USC but applied this year again to bacc/md, interviewed for it, and I got into bacc/md! but...I got in somewhere else too so I'm turning down USC bacc/md. If you have any specific questions for me or anything, I'd be happy to help you!

smart, my personal opinion is that both options are equally good and you should pursue the one that you're most comfortable with and that you think would provide you with the most enriching experience.

Thanks johnstoops, I just sent you a PM

To Smart Cookie: The best classes to take are the ones where you like the teachers and think you will get "A"s.

To Johnstoops: Congratulations on all of your acceptances! Which university are you going to?

Boston University 7-year BA/MD program. It's similar to the Bacc/MD program.

Hey, I also applied to RHP last year and chose not to go (but not the Bacc/MD), but then applied to the Bacc/MD this year and got in. I am going next year, though, haha, so I can help, too.

I can tell you that even though you can apply to the Bacc/MD as an RHP candidate, it's extremely hard to get in. They're really looking for maturity and direction, but at the same time a lot of people can be skeptical that a high school senior wants to be a doctor, let alone a high school junior. But yeah, if anyone has any questions, feel free to ask.

Oh, and btw, the Bacc/MD is not a six year program, it's an eight year program.

Thanks ppenguin757,
I just sent you a PM :)

i got into rhp this year, but am not gonna go. pm me if u have any questions about the admissions process

Thanks! I just PMed you!

I got in last year and didn't go due to financial aid, but reapplied this year and got trustee + university scholarships. But I wasn't sure whether I wanted to do Bacc/MD and in the deciding time missed the deadline, so I can't speak to that part, but if you want to, you can PM me too. And like johnstoops, I'm not going to SC this year, but I almost did choose SC. so close.

To aerableparable: May I ask where are you going?
