Rice '13 applications broke 10,000 mark

Applications for 2013 class surpass 10,000, breaks record - News

Exceeding last year's count of over 9,700 applicants, Rice University broke records again, attracting more than 10,000 applications this year for the first time in its history.

For the class of 2013, Rice received 720 applications for Early Decision, compared to 661 applications in 2007 and 517 applications in 2006. Of the 720 applications, Rice accepted about 200 students.

Not only did Rice experience a 5.5 percent increase in the number of ED applications, which increased for the second year in a row, but also a nearly 12 percent increase in applications in the overall applicant pool with 10,818 applications.

Last year Rice filled about 26 percent of its 2008- '09 entering freshman class through Early Decision.

With the opening of Duncan and McMurtry colleges this fall, the university aims to increase the entering freshman class from 789 to 850 students as per President David Leebron's Vision for the Second Century, which plans for a 30 percent increase in the number of undergraduate students by 2012.

Pursuing the aims of the Vision for the Second Century, the Admission Office reported considerable increases across the board this year. Foreign national applicants increased by more than 28 percent, African-American applicants increased by more than 11 percent, and non-Texan applicants increased by 12.7 percent. Applications from Texas residents grew by 10.5 percent.

The increase in the number of foreign national applicants this year constitutes a particularly significant increase, compounded on last year's 62.3 percent increase in the same category.

1 of 200~? Very nice.

Oh, no, I'm so scared...

So are they moving people into Duncan and McMurtry this fall?

well, I guess i won't be getting in this year....dang
have fun all ye future owls! i will live vicariously through you!!!
haha

Wow, they accepted a lower percentage of ED applicants this year - 27.8% as opposed to 30% last year (well, at least according to CollegeBoard - the article indicates differently).

This is exciting news.

Exciting? Only if your definition of exciting is cripplingly depressing...

i know seriously...i think he/she was being sarcastic (at least i hope so... haha)
oh well, this really sucks =(

Sorry, I see how that could be taken the wrong way. It's exciting in the sense that Rice's popularity and recognition is increasing; of the Top 20 schools, Rice seems to be the least well known. Now, the fact that this year's applicant pool will be extremely competitive? Yeah, that does suck.

Wow, i had multiple heart attacks reading this.
seems like our hidden jewel has been uncovered.

its now harder than ever to get into Rice...

At least Rice is getting more street cred. More popularity essentially = more attractive to employers.

well since im from TX, guess i can scratch out Rice from my list of potential acceptances :(.

Haha, just believe dude.
Remember like half of the kids who apply to good schools have like very under-par applications so if you have good stats and everything, your chances should be a bit higher.

I'm totally banking on being the token Vermonter...

Also, what anhtimmy said is very true. I'm sure there are lots of Texan parents saying to their kids, "Why don't you apply to Rice?" in the same way parents of the kids at my school encourage their kids to apply to Middlebury, regardless of whether they're qualified or not. CCers are NOT indicative of the whole applicant pool.

This is really weird.

At Dartmouth the overall acceptance rate is like 14 percent but their ed acceptance rate is 26 %.

at rice their overall acceptance rate is like 23% but their ed acceptance rate is 27.8 %.

Itseems like applying ed doesn't help as much at Rice as it does at Dartmouth. Wy is that?
