Applications were up 11% this year (12,386 applications and about 15 or so recruitment applications for spring sports). 20% were admitted to fill 940 freshman spaces. Middle 50% SAT score was 1420-1540 (of 1600). ACT was 31-34. Regular decision letters were mailed March 29, with email notification sent the day before.

** This info was sent to Rice alum interviewers from the Assoc Dir. of Admission, with permission to share it

Thanks! I’d been wondering about the new statistics myself. Would it be safe to say that this year has shown the highest number of applicants in Rice history? Seems like other colleges are reporting exactly that, ahaha.

Yes, that’s what Julie Browning told us at Owl Days.

Yes, the letter starts with “We have just completed another record-breaking year in the Rice admissions office!”

I’m curious how yields from a particular HS affect future classes. Rice took five kids from ds’s HS, and only one is going (she got in ED). Do you know the yield yet from that RD round? I’m assuming that 20% would be low, though running the above numbers it looks like maybe they think only 25% will accept? Am I figuring that correctly?

The numbers suggest Rice expected a 38% yield:
“12,386 applications… …20% were admitted” = 2477 admissions
“…to fill 940 freshman spaces” so 940/2477 = 0.38
If that panned out there would be no wait-list admissions, but they will have been conservative this year to ensure the entering class was under control. We have already seen some wait-listed students gaining admission, so their actual yield is less than 38%.

Mind to share the transfer students’ statistics as well?

Thanks, MS. I’m not great with a calculator; should have done it by hand!
