I know Rice is stellar in engineering and medicine; it's top-notch in music. What about the humanities? Does anyone have any experiences?

what department?

French and Philosophy

The philosophy department is good indeed. It’s even mentioned on Philosophical Gourmet. About the French department,I don’t know. They’ve got one Big Name type fellow, though, by in large, training in European languages is (not just at Rice) on the wane.

Rice is one of a very few places–I can think of no others–that provides money for undergraduate research in the humanities.

It might be best to just email the departments and talk to them. They will be fairly honest about what they do and do not do. They can also tell you whether what you want to do is within their scope of usual research or whatever.

Im sorry,I really dont know much else about those departments.

That sounds really neat, actually.

Antarius, I suppose I’ll do so. Thanks for your help.

It has an amazing History dept.

I can’t speak for the other Huma majors, but one of my majors was English and I also took a lot of History classes. So here’s my take on these 2 departments:

History department is awesome!!! There are some really top-notch professors in the department (Cox, etc) that are just so passionate they’ll make you want to become history professors too. History department offers a wide variety of studies as well.

English department is not as great. The professors are generally alright, but no one particularly exciting. The range of courses is pretty standard (your required periodic classes, culture studies, etc). It used to be pretty good, but due to the cut in budget, it’s very lackluster now. Since I’m now at Yale, I can tell you that I really see how limited the English department at Rice is compared to Yale. But History? I would say Rice is definitely on the same footing.

I’m glad to hear that about the history department, Salome. I’m thinking about majoring in it, so now I can tell my Yale friends that they’re not any better off in New Haven! :p

Not to mention the fact that you dont have to be in New Haven…Im a Boston guy, but not much love for New Haven… :P
