Rice and Political Perspectives

hey guys

what are your views on Rice's political standings. do a majority of the student body and faculty seem more liberal or conservative. If i were to take a liberal political stance for one of the personal statements, is the admissions office so conservative, with reference to the "Conservative South" stereotype, that they may be upset by what I say?

Input will be greatly appreciated

Rice is overall liberal. But it is a diverse place. I seriously doubt that the admissions office will be upset by what you say. Trust me.

Rice is a college campus (full of smart people), so it's already more liberal. Add to that the fact that this is the 4th largest city in the country. Rice does not fit the conservative south stereotype at all.

gotcha...

i was hoping for an answer like that.
thank you for the input.

If you search there has been lots of threads on this topic.

But suffice to say, though more conservative than a lot of other top tier schools, Rice is still predominantly liberal.

As a whole, it isn't a very politically active community though.

hopefully...liberal...

the good profs are generally more liberal! jk haha..

anyone notice how most intelligent intellectuals are liberal? just a thought...

most conservatives seem to have the philosophy of "I just want to have as much money as possible-- everyone else go to hell!!!"

Now which one seems to remind you of Lucifer? lol... :D

more conservative than most premier schools.

But which one ends up more succesful in life...the "intellectual" liberal professor, or the conservative upper management *******s that you describe? ;)

Depends on what you define "successful in life" as. I don't think you can say that liberals are more successful than conservatives or vice versa, because people uphold certain values more than others. If I base success on a monetary scale then I would say that there are more conservatives that are "successful," but if I believe that success is based on happiness or moral grounds then I would say that there are more liberals that fit in that category.

I wish this were true. To me it seems like more and more intellectuals are becoming conservative, but then again this applies to the country as a whole. There are more conservative think tanks out there nowadays than liberal ones. Some examples of conservative intellectuals are Bill O'Reilly and Grover Norquist, both Harvard grads. O'Reilly is a sharp debater, I must admit, and Norquist, if you've ever heard him speak, is brilliant.

Actually, professors have tremendous job security and make six figures, so they're not doing too shabby financially. Money doesn't always equate to "success" either. Every person defines success for themselves, and if you get to do something you love with decent salary as opposed to working with a high stress level, never seeing your family but making a lot of money, I'd rather take the first route.

George W. Bush is the figurehead of the Republican party. Debate your way out of that one, Bill O'Reilly.

CAN WE NOT TALK ABOUT BUSH???????? I LIVE IN TEXAS, it's bad enough having to deal with it here..lol.

Didn't mean to bash Texans. Just Republicans. Srry if I offended, I realize the state of Texas and its residents can hardly be blamed for Bush.

Well, we can be blamed for him... but that is another story. With a city the size of houston, you will have tons of different people. As for earlier posts, there is a huge conservative intellectual movement. But notice that this is completely seperate from what the average Joe thinks when he hears the term conservative. These intellectual conservatives are not fans of Bush or the Republican party.

-what are you talking about? Bill O'Reilly is an effing douche. he's not an intellectual at all. he's the most narcisstic, biased, and self-righteous idiot. he also does support bush and the republican party. a sharp debater?? are you joking? i see you've been brainwashed by his stupid show. he went to Harvard's Kennedy graduate school not undergrad. dont give him more credit than he deserves

OK, fine. Remember, I don't like Bill O'Reilly but I'm trying to be fair-minded. I'm not trying to stoop down to his level by bashing every trait of everyone I disagree with. Maybe O'Reilly was a wishy-washy example, but there are plenty of smart conservatives out there.

I highly doubt many of the conservative leaders respect Bush. They just supported him in the past because he has a "nice guy" image and was elect-able. Many abandoned him after his handling of Katrina.

It's cool to see Texans who are more left than right. I thought Natalie Maines was the only one =)

giuliani.. bloomberg

While I can't speak on the behalf of Rice University, Houston itself is an extremely liberal city compared to the rest of Texas. Because we're one of the largest cities, there's a rich cultural mix--something that I love! It's not unusual for every school in HISD to have a GSA. I'm not sure if that's standard everywhere else, but people openly wear rainbow colors, etc. Even though Houston is not the party city when compared to New York, there is an extremely active night life and along with that booze and drugs. A lot of people observe 4.20 and there are a ton of related smoke shops in the Houston area. Basically, we're not your average southern conservative town. Houston is waaay more liberal than people give us credit for! :-P

I'm not sure if this answers your original question of Rice being liberal/conservative or not, but hopefully it helps.

in response to the oreilly supporter - you are dead wrong. if you did debate/watched a lot of political commentary he is a fool. hannity is jesus compared to oreilly when it comes to debating

Woah.......
Now, I am no fan of oreilly, but he is better than hannity.
