Hello. Since there are only 25 spots for the incoming Architecture class, I thought this would be a good place to discuss anything in regards to the Architecture application process such as did you apply ED or RD, where are you from, how did your Art portfolio turn out, etc? Good luck!!! :)

I love Rice! I’m applying RD from Florida, haven’t quite started Rice’s essays yet, and not really done with my art portfolio.

Since there are so few spots, does anyone know what Rice is looking for in an architecture applicant?

I am the father of a Rice applicant, he applied ED. We visited Rice last month (we live in Minnesota) and he interviewed with a member of the architecture school faculty. I was not invited in for that, but son said it went well and they mostly discussed different software programs the school uses. IMO he’s got a slim chance, but he felt he needed to try, because you never know! An earlier post I saw on this site (from 2008) stated that year, approx. 300 applied to Rice Architecture, 42 accepted, and 25 enrolled. So I’d guess that’d be a good estimate of what the 2014 applicants will face. Son’s portfolio was a mix of sketches, photography, models, and some Revit he did in a CAD class he took in high school last year.

As a 50-year-old guy, I do remember trying to get into a prestigous school (and my GPA was nowhere near my son’s), but truth be told, once you’ve been in the work force 10 years or so (in most any field), where you went to college isn’t that important- the quality of the education you received, and how you applied it in ‘the real world’ is what matters to employers. Good luck!

Hello! I’m also applying to Rice Architecture. I was wondering: If I’m accepted to Rice School of Architecture, do I have to enroll in the school, or can I still choose to go to a different college within Rice? And can one applying to Rice Architecture be accepted to Rice and not Rice Architecture? (Some of my other schools offer these options, but I’m not sure whether Rice does.)

Don’t take my word as solid, but you do not have to declare a major until your sophomore year. So while you may get accepted to Arch, you can change to anything you want, however the reverse is not true (that I know of). I do not believe you can switch IN to Arch.

Oh, re-reading… I do not know if you could be accepted to Rice, although you applied to Arch, I think that you probably could.

I believe the answer is yes for both. You can be accepted into Rice but not the specialized school of architecture. I know of 2 music students who started in the Shepard school and then switched to something else; the music school is similar to the archi school in terms of specialized application process and being highly selective so I am extrapolating to say that the same applied to architecture.

Thanks! :)
